It is rare when a prospect Lio Lafaele had it from two very good sources that Texas Tech is the place to be.
And so Lafaele became Texas Tech's third commitment of the 2015 class on Sunday, joining Port Arthur Memorial running back Corey Dauphine and Stephenville quarterback Jarrett Stidham.
"Honestly, the only thing I can do is hear about it," he said Sunday. "I haven't seen anything, so everything is all ears and everything seems good to me. Texas Tech was the first school that actually saw potential in me."
Lafaele, 6-foot-4, 300 pounds, will join former coach Darrin Chiaverini and teammate Dominique Robertson in Lubbock. Chiaverini, hired in January to be Texas Tech's special teams coordinator, has played a big part in Lafaele's development and his decision to commit to Tech.
"Aw man, coach Chiaverini, he saw me since I was nothing. He picked me up right out of high school, he picked me up from JC saying I had a lot of potential to play D1 football," Lafaele said. "Then when he went to Texas Tech he saw the bright future ahead of me and he never disappointed me since the JC level."
Robertson's decision to sign with he Red Raiders over several other offers also made a big impression on Lafaele.
"That's my boy. Everyday we get each other pumped up for the game, it's awesome playing next to him and you obviously know about Dominique Robertson," Lafaele said. "He had so many offers, then he picked Texas Tech. He told me it was awesome. It would be awesome to play with, shoot, an awesome offensive lineman at the next level."
Lafaele said he hasn't talked with the Tech coaching staff about plans to visit, but that he will. He also added that offensive line coach Lee Hays wants to take a look at him at every position along the line, which speaks to his ability.
Lafaele has three years to play two seasons and said he hopes to make it to campus by December.
"I would just like to thank the coaching staff for seeing a potential Red Raider," Lafaele said.
