Series History: Texas Tech-Central Arkansas

Texas Tech and Central Arkansas will meet for the first time 6 p.m. Saturday at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, TX.

Texas Tech and Central Arkansas have absolutely zero history.

The two teams have never met and part of the reason why is because Central Arkansas was a division two school one decade ago. Prior to their time in Division II, they were in the NAIA.

The Bears do have some history on their side though. They’ve won three NAIA National Championships and since moving up to the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, they’ve won two Southland titles.

The Red Raiders are currently 17-1 against FCS schools since the subdivision was formed in 1978. The Mean Green of North Texas pulled off the upset of a Spike Dykes coached Texas Tech team in 1988.

The Red Raiders have won 11 consecutive season openers and 13 of their last 14. The one season opening loss came at the hands of the 2002 Ohio State Buckeyes. It marked the debut of arguably one of the greatest disappointments in the history of football, Maurice Clarett. Clarett ran all over the Texas Tech defense and eventually led the Buckeyes to a perfect season including a triple overtime victory in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl to win the BCS National Championship.

Since becoming a Division I institution, Central Arkansas has performed well against FBS schools. Although the Bears have amassed a 1-7 record, Central Arkansas has never lost by more than 30 points. Most FBS schools are lucky to stay within that range. Others have to resort to a running clock and beg for mercy during an 88-0 drubbing.

The lone victory over an FBS school since 2006 came in 2009 over a team who was transitioning from the FCS to the FBS. Western Kentucky was in their first season as an FBS institution when the Bears defeated the Hilltoppers. Central Arkansas is currently 0-2 against power conference teams, but scored more than 50 points combined in the two games.

The history books open up again when Texas Tech hosts Central Arkansas at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock Saturday. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
