3 Essential Keys to Victory: Arkansas

Texas Tech takes on Arkansas 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, TX. The following are three things the Red Raiders must do in order to emerge victorious.

Stop the run
This is the most consistent key and there is a reason why. The Red Raiders have yet to play a Power 5 conference team, much less a team who made a bowl game one season ago. Despite this, Tech has claimed victory in both games by a combined 11 points. A big reason for this is the defense allowing 222.5 rushing yards per game. Six different running backs have achieved the 40-yard mark against Tech. Two of these have hit 90-plus yards.

Force Turnovers
Texas Tech is -3 on the turnover margin. Central Arkansas picked off Davis Webb twice. UTEP recovered a fumble. Texas Tech has yet to force a turnover and the scoreboard has reflected it. Opposing teams, including an FCS team and another squad which finished 2-10 in 2013, have combined to score 61 points against the Red Raiders. Tech must force turnovers against Arkansas. The Razorbacks recovered a fumble in a road game against Auburn and stayed fairly close to the Tigers for the first half. A turnover can create a wave of momentum, particularly when a team plays at home.

Score early and often
In each of the first two games this season Tech got off to a slow start. The Red Raiders failed to draw first blood both times. In addition, Tech has been outscored in the first quarter 9-7. Against a Power 5 conference team, Tech must get off to a better start.
