His coach, Craig Stump, says there are reasons why he’s the district 16-6A leader in receptions and receiving yards.
“He’s one of the fastest guys in the region.”
Stump also mentioned size (6-foot-2, 190 pounds), speed (4.5-second 40) and coachability as big reasons why Shorts is a major threat to any defense.
Shorts recently decommitted from UTSA after gaining an offer from Texas Tech. Stump also confirmed Texas A&M is showing strong interest.
Just got offered by Texas Tech!!! #GunsUp I'm blessed man! ????— Quan Shorts1? (@Quann_) October 28, 2014
When asked if Shorts was one of the best receivers in the state, Stump declined to say, but believes he is definitely a top-notch player in the Houston area.
“Yeah, I think so. I think he is, for sure the Houston area. Obviously, I haven’t seen everybody in the state. But I think with his size and mobility and the speed that he possesses at 195, close to 200 pounds, that’s hard to match. And his ability to get the ball. He’s got strong hands and snatches the ball.”
After interviewing coach Stump on Wednesday afternoon, RaiderPower.com caught up with Shorts later that evening for the following Q&A via text messages:
RP: Which schools have offered you thus far?
Shorts: I don’t know all the offers I have.
RP: According to Scout.com: Utah, Texas Tech, North Texas, New Mexico, Memphis, Louisiana Tech, Kansas, Colorado, BYU, UTSA. Are there any missing that you know of?
Shorts: Yeah, that’s it.
RP: That’s A LOT of offers.
Shorts: Not compared to some people I know. I only been playing wideout 2 years and I was hurt all last year! So I couldn’t really showcase my talent! I feel like that’s why I don’t have as many big offers!
RP: But now you’re the leading receiver in district 16-6A, do you feel more offers are coming your way?
Shorts: Yes. I feel like I should get more because of my film. It speaks for itself.
RP: One of the offers you received recently was Texas Tech. Did that come from your film or did someone come visit you? How did you learn about the offer?
Shorts: My film. He said he loved it and I fit the program there trying to build.
RP: Who said that?
Shorts: Coach Eric Morris
RP: Is he your primary contact with Tech?
Shorts: Yes. I talk to all of the coaches really.
RP: Any chance you’ll take an official visit to Tech?
Shorts: Yes I will in Dec! I will most likely commit when I go.
EDIT: Shorts texted RP the following day and moved his official visit date up to Nov. 15.
RP: Yes, I’ve seen reports that Tech is your No.1 school. I’m guessing these reports are true?
Shorts: Yes they are.
RP: Are there any other schools who have a shot with you?
Shorts: Texas A&M.
RP: I understand they are showing a strong interest in you. Have you been to their campus yet?
Shorts: Yes I’ve been about 3 times
RP: What is it about Tech that currently holds the edge over A&M?
Shorts: Tech shows me the most love. I feel wanted and it’s a great fit for me.
RP: Quan, thank you for your time! I look forward to keeping up with you in the playoffs. Good luck!
Shorts: Thank you.
