Texas Tech-Baylor Series History

Texas Tech (4-7, 2-6 in Big 12) wraps the season against No. 5 Baylor (9-1, 6-1_ at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX. The Red Raiders lead the all-time series against the Bears 36-35-1.

The most played opponent in Texas Tech football history is Baylor.

Many Texas Tech fans wouldn’t believe this and many have little respect for Baylor football. Some even believe that Baylor is a team that has always been a doormat who just hired a Texas Tech graduate and all of a sudden became really good.

The truth is, Baylor dominated this series until the demise of the Southwest Conference. The Bears were a decent program. Baylor had its good years and its awful years. Until Robert Griffin III came along, they never had a Heisman Trophy winner and still had yet to win a national championship. This program played Texas Tech many times as a nationally ranked team though.

Texas Tech currently leads the all-time series 36-35-1. The one draw came in 1945. If you were born in 1985 or after, imagine your favorite team losing to Baylor 11 consecutive times. Texas Tech did exactly that between 1947 and 1960. Consider Baylor the laughable doormat anymore?

Okay, so Tech got revenge for those 11 times. Now turn the tables and wonder how it would feel to lose to the same team 16 consecutive times and 19 out of 21 times. Add on the fact that Baylor has not won in Lubbock since 1990. The Bears haven’t won at home since 1995. A big reason for neither of those streaks coming to an end is the recent move of the rivalry to AT&T Stadium (a.k.a. Jerry World, The Death Star, Cowboys Stadium).

Baylor was able to snap one streak in particular recently though, and Texas Tech has yet to avenge it. The Bears snapped Texas Tech’s 20-year streak of bowl eligibility in 2011 with a 66-42 victory without Griffin playing quarterback. Although RG3 started, it was Nick Florence who came in and led the Bears past Texas Tech ending Baylor’s 16-game losing skid in the series. This game gave Tech a fifth straight loss forcing a 5-7 finish.

Baylor has won three straight against Texas Tech. The Red Raiders look to spoil the Bears hopes of a second straight Big 12 Championship by ending the streak 2:30 p.m. Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
