The offensive tackle said can’t wait to graduate from Bowie High School and get on the field with the Red Raiders, until then he plans to keep working hard in the gym and to keep his head in the books.
Akamnonu said he has been working out to improve his footwork and conditioning and plans to stay on a workout plan throughout the spring so he can show up to Texas Tech ready to compete.
“I want to try to show out when I step on the field and be the most physical person on the field,” Akamnonu said.
Besides working in the gym he has been studying the game of football and certain players that he looks up to.
“I’ve been watching offensive tackles in the NFL and in college on how they operate and watching old Texas Tech games,” Akamnonu said.
He added he watches and looks up to guys like Tyron Smith from the Cowboys, Zach Strief from the Saints and Texas Tech’s own Le'Raven Clark.
One of the games Akamnonu recorded and went over was Texas Tech’s spring game in Midland. He said he studied the offensive tackle positions and that they looked like a solid group. He added the whole offense looked good as well.
Watching the spring game pumped up Akamnonu, who said he can’t wait to suit up in red and black.
“I've been dying to play with them. There was good energy during the game. When I was watching it was fast pace and that’s the kind of offense I like,” Akamnonu said.
