Q&A: D'Vonta 'Hitman' Hinton

RaiderPower.com caught up with Texas Tech 2015 linebacker signee D'Vonta Hinton days before he was set to move to Lubbock and enroll. Hinton has since made it to campus and has a message for Red Raider fans on what to expect.

RP: What day are you going to report?

Hinton: "I will be reporting Sunday. I will be moving up to Tech Saturday night."

RP: When did you decide you were going to be a Red Raider? Was it on the spring game visit?

Hinton: "Exactly, on the visit, that's when I figured out I wanted to be a Red Raider. I just like Texas Tech, I like the vibe, I like the community, it's a close-knit town. They enjoy football a lot and I love playing football. I had a bond with the coaches and they believed in me as far as my height. Some schools were second-guessing because of my height, but Tech offered me and they believed in me. I appreciated that."

RP: Who was your primary recruiter?

Hinton: "Coach Kevin Curtis."

RP: What did your parents say when you told them you were going to commit to Texas Tech?

Hinton: "My dad actually knew I was gonna commit to Texas Tech before I committed. They were just proud for me. My mom, she had cried, she was just sad because it was so far from home, but she wants the best for me and we all felt like that was the best place for me to go."

RP: How do you explain how nice you are off the field, but how mean you are on the field?

Hinton: "I used to be bad, in grade school, but as I got older I matured. I'm a nice guy if you get to know me. I'm friendly. But don't push my buttons, because when you switch it on, it's on. It's automatically on when I'm on the field. As soon as I step on the field I turn into a beast, a savage. No friends, nothing like that. When you see me playing the game, you're like 'is that the same guy?' I'm just different. I just have that little button, if you click it.... on the football field, it's automatically clicked, but in general if you click it, it's over."

RP: Have the coaches told you that you're going to redshirt?

Hinton: "They told me I was gonna play. It's up to me, I've got to come in, learn the plays, do what I've gotta do. I'm gonna play. I'll be starting off at Will, and then I'll eventually learn the middle linebacker spot."

RP: What were the stats for your senior year?

Hinton:"I had 118 tackles, and twelve tackles for loss."

RP: Do you have anything to say to Texas Tech fans before you report and start that freshman media blackout?

Hinton:"Texas Tech, get ready, 'cuz Hitman Hinton is coming to town!"
