Midland DL Shines at Tech Satellite Camp

RaiderPower.com caught up with Midland defensive lineman Traver Vliem shortly after he competed in Texas Tech's satellite camp at Euless Trinity High School on Sunday. Get the scoop on whare he stands with the Red Raiders and his overall recruitment inside.

Midland (TX) defensive lineman Traver Vliem took part in Texas Tech's North DFW satellite camp on Sunday, making the trek from Midland to compete against some of the best the Metroplex had to offer.

The 6-foot-3, 240-pound West Texas standout impressed the coaches with his performance at the camp, held at Euless Trinity High School.

"I won all my reps, it went pretty great. Coach Smith noticed me in line for the pre-registration, he just came up and talked to me for a few minutes. When I was done with that he took me around and introduced me to the coaches. It went well."

The Dallas-Fort Worth area is known for producing a high volume of D1 prospects, and Vliem traveled to the Metroplex to compete against the high caliber competition in front of the coaching staff. He has family in the area, which made the trip easier.

"I think along with myself there were two or three other guys who really stood out. I think the competition I went against was great."

An offer could be imminent after the in-person evaluation by defensive line coach Mike Smith.

"Coach Smith told me he was gonna hit me up later, but he said I did well. He said he would contact me later on."

Tech was pretty high on Vliem's list when RaiderPower.com last spoke to him, but is that still the case?

"Yeah. For sure. It's close to home and now that I've got to work with the coaches I would say I like them even more. Coach Smith is a great coach and I like working with him. His energy is just awesome. The way he coaches, he brings out the best in everybody and he expects a lot from you and I think he gets that in return."

June 30 is commitment day for Vliem, who holds offers from Army, Air Force, Nevada, and FCS powerhouse North Dakota State among others.

"I'm pretty comfortable with all the schools that have offered and the ones that I think will be offering soon. If I do get any unexpected offers then I can try to make those visits, but I'm gonna try and visit all the schools that are high on my list, and then make my decision."

Vliem will be resting on Monday before going to the Michigan Dallas Showtyme Elite satellite camp in Grand Prairie, part of Jim Harbaugh's seven-state "Summer Swarm Tour".

"I'll be there on the 9th, I've had limited contact with them but I know that they've watched me and like what they see so I'll be out there to compete. I'm looking forward to that. Michigan, USC, UTEP (which has already offered) and I think Central Arkansas will be there as well."

Vliem currently holds fourteen offers. He reports interest from Texas Tech, TCU, SMU, Cal, and Texas State among others.
