Q&A: Lonzell Gilmore

Most of the Texas Tech 2015 signing class is already on campus, attending class and working out with the team, including Lonzell Gilmore. RaiderPower.com caught up with the former Spring defensive end just before he made it to campus.

Spring defensive end Lonzell Gilmore committed to Texas Tech back in December and eventually signed with the Red Raiders despite other schools taking a last-minute flier at him.

Gilmore was rated as a three-star prospect, ranked as the No. 6 defensive end in Texas by Scout. He is now another player on the roster trying to earn playing time.

The following Q&A was conducted before he enrolled at Texas Tech:

RaiderPower.com: What are your thoughts on the Texas Tech defense, going up there and playing along that defensive line?

Gilmore: I'm set, I mean, we got the Big 12 leader in sacks, big boy Breiden Fehoko... we're gonna be straight.

RaiderPower.com:It seems like there will be lots of opportunities for you to get early playing time at Tech. Are you expecting to redshirt this season?

Gilmore: "It depends on how I do. If I do good this summer, then I think I'm gonna play. If I don't play right away, if I've got to redshirt, I'm fine with it."

RaiderPower.com: What were your stats your senior season and what particular position did you play?

Gilmore:"I had 126 tackles. I had seven sacks and 26 TFLs. I played weakside defensive end."

RaiderPower.com: Will you be playing that standup defensive line position, behind Pete Robertson?

Gilmore:"Yes, sir."

RaiderPower.com: Who was the coach that you formed the strongest relationship with over the course of your recruitment?

Gilmore:"Everybody, but I would say coach Curtis."

RaiderPower.com: Why did you commit to Texas Tech?

Gilmore:"Basically, I just thought every school that offered me had pros and cons. Tech had better pros than cons for me."

RaiderPower.com: When did you know for sure that you were going to end up at Tech?

Gilmore:"Around the time I committed. I guess sometime in December."

RaiderPower.com: Who are some of the signees that you're close with?

Gilmore:"Probably Madison (Akamnonu) and Jonathan Giles."

RaiderPower.com: Do you have anything you want to say to Red Raider Nation before you move up to Tech?

Gilmore:"Guns Up!"
