Hanspard Excited for Texas Tech Offer

RaiderPower.com caught up with 2018 DeSoto receiver B.J. Hanspard, a Texas Tech legacy, who received his first offer from the Red Raiders after attending a satellite camp.

DeSoto 2018 wide receiver B.J. Hanspard is one step closer to following in his father’s footsteps after receiving his first offer to play college football.

That offer came from Texas Tech, where his father, Byron Hanspard, set and still holds school records for most rushing yards in a game (287), most rushing yards in a single season (2,084) and most career rushing yards (4,219). He also garnered All-American honors, along with the 1996 Doak Walker Award in his time (1994-96) as a Red Raider.

“It feels great,” Hanspard said about receiving the offer. “It is just more motivation to keep working.”

The offer came after Hanspard attended Texas Tech camp and was able to meet and talk with all the coaches. Later that night Hanspard received a call from assistant coach Emmett Jones who officially extended the offer.

Hanspard walked in to the Texas Tech camp not knowing what to expect, but did so because his head coach told him to check it out. He didn’t realize that the coaches had been watching him when they were at DeSoto watching the older guys.

He went on to say he was thoroughly impressed by the camp, and learned a lot on the football side and also how to communicate with the coaches.

“The camp was phenomenal. I was watching the drills. I loved the intensity. There was great competition. It was great watching how everyone wanted to get better,” Hanspard said.

Hanspard could not participate in any of the drills because he is battling a high ankle sprain from spring football. Although it didn’t stop him from being able to talk with the coaches, Hanspard said he met almost all of the offensive coaches at the camp including coach Kingsbury.

“It was great meeting all the coaches,” Hanspard said. “They felt like family.” Hanspard is familiar with the Texas Tech program and said he watched them when they had Michael Crabtree and has watched his fair share of his dad’s film from when he was a Red Raider.

Of course receiving your first college offer is huge, but that Hanspard received it from the school his dad starred at means a lot to him.

“I know Texas Tech believed in me. They wanted to see me work hard and when I was at the camp they kept asking me if I could be even better than my dad was,” Hanspard said.

Hanspard’s main goal is to hold up the legacy of his father and keep it going for his little brother, who will be a freshman running back at DeSoto in the fall. He said doing that is not an easy task but it is source of motivation to keep working hard.

The next step for Hanspard is to take care of his injury so he can participate in more camps and catch the eyes of more college coaches.

For now he said to “Give God all the glory and praise,” for everything he has received thus far.
