Texas Tech Legacy Ty Thomas Talks Offer caught up with Lubbock Cooper junior safety Ty Thomas for the scoop on how his offer from Texas Tech took place. The Washington State commit has close ties to the Red Raider coaching staff, including head coach Kliff Kingsbury, and assistant Darrin Chiavirini (pictured above).

Lubbock native and Texas Tech legacy Ty Thomas received an unexpected call on Tuesday morning and it was Kliff Kingsbury extending an offer to play for the Red Raiders.

The 5-foot-11 safety out of Lubbock Cooper is currently committed to Washington State, but was shocked and excited when he picked up and heard Kingsbury on the line.

“I’ve been a fan of coach Kingsbury since he was hired on at Tech, so it was exciting to get an offer from him,” Thomas said.

He went on to say he has been keeping in touch many on the coaching staff, but mainly coach Kingsbury, coach Eric Morris, and coach David Gibbs. He also mentioned being close with coach Darrin Chiaverini’s son Curtis, a Cooper teammate, and family.

“[I like] their energy on and off the field,” Thomas said. “They’re a great staff.”

There is scarlet and black in his family history, so this offer hit close to home. Thomas is the son of former Texas Tech safety Bart Thomas, and nephew of hall of fame linebacker  Zach Thomas

He said the history definitely plays a part; both men have played a huge role in his life. Although, Thomas said he wants to make his own impact in college football.

“I’ve always wanted to be my own person and work for what I receive. I think the coaches at Texas Tech know that. Mainly, just not receiving my scholarship because of my last name,” he said.

Thomas added he is gracious of the coaching staff and all of the support he has gotten through his recruitment.
