Denton (Tex.) Ryan defensive end Earnest Brown IV has put Texas Tech on his ‘to visit’ list for this year.
The 6-foot-5, 228-pound defensive end received an offer from Texas Tech’s new defensive line coach Kevin Patrick about three or four weeks ago. He said it is a program that has always stood out to him.
“I was just happy. It’s Texas Tech. That means a lot that they offered me. I just am so excited to go down there and meet coach Patrick and the other coaches,” he said.
Coach Patrick keeps in touch with Brown about two or three times a week, and has so far made a good impression.
“He’s a great coach, and he’s an All-American. He’s a great fellow as well. We have had some great conversations and I feel comfortable around him.” Brown said.
Brown said he has watched Texas Tech play a few times on TV in the past couple years and “they’ve always been good on defense.” That is what he likes about the Red Raiders.
A visit to Lubbock is in the works for Brown, who said he would most likely visit on junior day in March. The Red Raiders are not the only ones who have caught Brown’s attention. He said he is interested and talking the most with schools that have offered including: Baylor, Houston, Iowa, SMU, Texas State and Texas Tech.
He added that he likes what all of those teams have done this season. He called Baylor a powerhouse, was impressed that Houston and Iowa both won their bowl games and Houston ended up being ranked No. 8. He added that going to a successful program is important to him, and as you can see many are interested in him as well.
Academics are a high priority for Brown as he searches for the right program. He said that is what he will have when he is done playing, so it is important that he considers that.
For right now, Brown said he is going to try to make a point to visit all the schools he is interested in and will make his decision after that process is done. He added this is not something he wants to rush.
The class of 2017 prospect has a three stars rating by Scout and RaiderPower.com reporter Zach Tanner included him on the Top 10 Texas Tech Targets of the class.
Tanner said “Earnest Brown IV is an extremely active player off the edge for Ryan and played a big role in their deep playoff run this season, as they knocked off the likes of Plano East and South Grand Prairie before losing in the quarterfinals to Allen. Adding some depth behind this most recent crop of defensive linemen, especially considering that DeShay wasn't a part of the class, would be a smart move for the coaching staff.”
