Texas Tech Spring Ball Questions: Will the Coaching Staff Be Intact?

The Texas Tech football program has undergone massive changes since the end of the 2015 season and it's an ongoing process. As such there are a lot of questions heading into spring ball. Over the next five days leading up to the first practice we'll be looking at five of the biggest questions surrounding the team one question, one day at a time. First up is a look at the overhauled coaching staff.

Over the next five days leading up to the first practice we'll be looking at five of the biggest questions surrounding the team one question, one day at a time. First up:

1. Will the coaching staff be intact by the start of spring ball?

For an oh-so-fleeting-moment it looked as if the coaching search was over and the staff was finally complete with the hiring of cornerbacks Karl Scott a couple weeks ago. That idea was quickly dashed by the announcement Jabar Juluke, who was named as the new running backs coach (replacing Mike Jinks) on Jan. 20, was returning to his native Louisiana to take the same job at LSU, which has been said to be a dream destination for him. (No word if mama had any say in this.)

But I'm getting ahead of myself. For any of you Tech fans who have been living under a rock, or even just for kicks, let's review the timeline of all the coaching changes since the day after Tech beat Texas 48-45 in Austin to end the regular season.

  • Dec. 1: Tech officially announces defensive assistants and Tech alums/former standout players Kevin Curtis (CBs), Trey Haverty (LBs) and Mike Smith (DL) would not be returning for the 2016 season and would not be coaching in the bowl game.
  • Dec. 30: Running backs coach Mike Jinks leaves to become the head coach at Bowling Green. Outside receivers coach/special teams coordinator Darrin Chiaverini leaves to become the co-offensive coordinator/receivers coach/recruiting coordinator Colorado, his alma mater. It should be noted it was known well before Dec. 30 each coach was leaving, but both chose to stay and help the team prep for the Texas Bowl.
  • Jan. 2: Tech announces the resignation of strength and conditioning coach Chad Dennis. RP learned from several very good sources the whole S&C department was being replaced.
  • Jan. 4: Emmett Jones, who had served as Tech's Director of Player Development since the previous February, is promoted to an offensive assistant. He might coach outside receivers or might coach RBs. The thought has been receivers, but we'll see.
  • Tech also announces the hiring of veteran coach Joe Robinson to run the special teams. Robinson, a native West Texas, also has experience coaching defensive line and tight ends so he could help in a lot of areas.
  • Jan. 9: Rusty Whitt joins Texas Tech as new strength and conditioning coach following a long stint at Louisiana-Lafayette.
  • Jan. 20: Kevin Patrick is announced as new DL coach from UNT. (Note: The Miss St. Scout site reported late last week Patrick was expected to interview for the vacant DL job there. RP has not been able to confirm this as of late Sunday night.) Jabar Juluke is also announced as running backs coach that day, coming over from Louisiana Tech.
  • Feb. 12: Karl Scott joins Tech as the new cornerbacks coach, coming over from Louisiana Tech.
  • Feb. 13: Tech announces Juluke is returning to Louisiana for the LSU RBs coaching job.
  • Kingsbury is quoted as saying he wants to find a replacement for Juluke before spring ball begins.
