Tech secures No. 6

The Red Raiders identified several of their '04 targets and are aggressively pursuing them. Already up to 6 commitments, they'd like to lock up a couple more before September rolls around. That said, they'll use the months of Septemeber, October, November and December to further evaluate the high school crop as they look to ink a class high and long on defensive line talent, grab a quarterback, and meet their goals regarding depth at several other positons.

RaiderPower caught up with Lawton Oklahoma DE Jake Ratliff -- Texas Tech's 6th commitment so far. Ratliff, a 6-6/6-7, 240 pounder pulled the commitment trigger this past Tuesday. He was offered a 'ship by Mike Leach and Co. after making a one-day camp in June and decided to wrap up the process.

"I liked everything about Texas Tech," Ratliff said, "The facilities, the coaches, everything down there. They were the first team to offer and I guess that meant they wanted me pretty bad and stuff."

No one else had offered the Oklahoma DE, so Tech became an instant favorite.

When the senior-to-be decided to phone in his verbal, he called it in to linebacker coach Johnny Barr.

"I told him I wanted to go ahead and commit and he said, 'Okay, that's good news'," Ratliff informed.

The Lawton Eisenhower prep clocked a forty time in the 5.0-range at Tech's camp while clocking a 4.8 at the Oklahoma State camp, so he can move pretty well considering the monster frame he has. When he gets his feet underneath him, kid could be a major weapon.

In addition to football, Ratliff was a center on last year's high school basketball team, pitcher/1st-baseman on the baseball team and does a little bit of team roping.

"Last Tuesady night, my partner and I won a buckle and some money after taking first in the team roping contest," Ratliff said. "We timed out around a 7-somethin', which wasn't fast, but fast enough to win that night."

Tech alumni/fans are hoping Ratliff can tie up opposing Big 12 QB's over the next 4-5 years. We'll have a bit more from him later...
