Texas Tech, led by outside receivers coach Emmett Jones, has been recruiting Fort Worth South Hills receiver Calvin Clater for a while now and hosted the 6-foot-3 receiver for an unofficial visit over the weekend.
Clater originally planned on visiting for the spring game, but made the trek a week earlier instead. Despite missing the Red and Black game, Clater saw plenty he liked, which he detailed in the following interview conducted through direct messages via Twitter:
Raider Power: First off, how'd the visit go overall? What'd you do?
Clater: It was an awesome visit. I watched practice and I met a lot of the players and the other half of the coaching staff. They gave me a tour around the whole campus. I liked it A LOT and I sat down and talked with Coach Jones.
Raider Power: Yeah, I read in a couple of your interviews with Zach Tanner that Coach Jones is leading your recruitment. What's your relationship like and what all did he say on the visit?
Clater: We have a great relationship. I talk to coach a lot and he said all he wants to see is me move around in person and that will be May 4th during spring ball.
Raider Power: Are they looking at you primarily at inside receiver?
Clater: Outside receiver. I Play outside. I don't play inside.
Raider Power: Ah. What'd you think of Tech's outside receivers during practice?
Clater: I think they're all very good athletes and they know how to work hard. They're physical and quick off the line of scrimmage.
Raider Power: You said you liked the campus a lot. What stood out, What'd you like about it?
Clater: I liked the weight room a lot, the student rec center and of course the football athletics center.
Raider Power: Do you have a leader or top group and do you know when you want to decide?
Clater: I want to decide sometime near December but it may be sooner and Tech is definitely in my top 5
Raider Power: Great. Who else is in the top 5? And what are you looking for overall in a school and program?
Clater: I really don't have an order yet but my interest in Tech is very high and I like Mississippi St. too but there's a lot of schools that's contacting me.
Raider Power: Is there anything else about the visit, Tech or you overall recruitment I'm missing or you'd like to add?
Clater: No sir.
Raider Power: Alright, thanks for your time and congrats on all your success.
Clater: Thank you and no problem.
Clater currently holds an offer from Nevada and reports interest from Colorado, Houston, Louisiana-Monroe, LSU, Oklahoma, TCU, and Texas Tech, among others.
