Texas Tech began recruiting Oolagah defensive end Brock Martin about six weeks ago, but have already built a strong relationship with the Okie athlete.
In fact, following Martin's visit to the South Plains over the weekend Martin told RaiderPower.com that Tech is atop his list of schools. Martin holds an offer from Wyoming and is hearing from several schools including Kansas State, where he is scheduled to visit later this month.
The 6-2, 219-pound defensive end, who was credited with 96 tackles and 17 sacks last season despite missing several games due to a knee injury and is a two-time Oklahoma state wrestling champ, broke down his visit to Tech and why the Red Raiders made such a strong impression on him.
Raider Power: First off, how'd the visit go overall?
Martin: Great visit. Had a great time.
Raider Power: What did you do on the visit? Anything stand out?
Martin: I toured the campus and football facilities, met coaches, they took my measurements and I watched practice.
Raider Power: Who did you travel with? What did they think of the visit, program and campus?
Martin: My parents traveled with me, they loved everything about it.
Raider Power: What'd you measure in at?
Martin: 6'2 3/4 height, 6'6 wingspan, 9 inch hands, 218 pounds.
Raider Power: How long has Tech been recruiting you?
Martin: They've been recruiting me for about a month and a half.
Raider Power: Which coach do you hear from the most?
Martin: I hear from coach Patrick the most.
Raider Power: What's your impression of Coach Patrick?
Martin: Coach Patrick is a straight forward guy. I like him a lot.
Raider Power: Have they talked about how they see you fitting into the system? Are they looking at you primarily as a DE?
Martin: They are looking at me as a DE, yes.
Raider Power: Did they say anything about coming out to see you during spring ball or talk about an offer?
Martin: They are coming out to see me this spring yes. And an offer is being talked about. They just want to see me on the field first.
Raider Power: Who else are you hearing from and is Tech in the mix for you after the visit?
Martin: Wyoming, Kansas, K-State, Texas Tech, Tulsa, OSU, ULM, Ohio, Air Force, Colorado State, Arkansas State, SFA, UCA, that's all I can think of. Yes, Texas Tech would be at the top.
Raider Power: What puts Tech up top for you?
Martin: Great staff, coach Gibbs is trying to rebuild a defense and he showed he can do that at Houston.
Raider Power: That's good stuff. I saw from your Twitter bio you are two-time state wrestling champ. Does you wrestling background help on the football field. If so, how? Also, any plans to wrestle at the next level?
Martin: No plans to wrestle at the next level. Wrestling helps tremendously; with my hands and awareness about what's happening around me, balance, and most of all my mental toughness and grit.
Raider Power: Anything about the trip or Tech I'm missing or anything you'd like to add?
Martin: Wreck Em Tech!
Raider Power: Thanks for your time and congrats on all your success.
Martin: Thank you.
