Texas Tech Dismisses 3 Players

A look at how the dismissals of reserve offensive linemen Robert Castaneda and Trace Ellison, plus starting middle linebacker Dakota Allen affects Texas Tech's depth chart.

Texas Tech announced via a press release Thursday morning head football coach Kliff Kingsbury had dismissed three players from the football team.

Two were reserve offensive linemen. Redshirt sophomore lineman Robert Castaneda's departure had been known since the end of spring football, but Trace Ellison, who redshirted as a freshman last season, was listed as the backup left tackle on Tech's post spring depth chart (shown below) and was expected to at least add depth to the offensive line next season.

The real gut-punch of the announcement is the dismissal of starting middle linebacker Dakota Allen. The redshirt sophomore was Tech's leading returning tackler from last season and by all accounts had become one of the leaders on the defense.

His departure from the program means other linebackers such as senior Malik Jenkins and sophomore D'Vonta Hinton, who each have at least some experience at the Mike linebacker, have to step up. Other options include freshman John Picone and graduate transfer Luke Stice. Redshirt freshman Jamile Johnson will also help with depth at outside backer if Hinton or Jenkins slides inside.

Tech declined to explain why each were dismissed and said it would "have no further comment on the dismissals." Stay tuned as RaiderPower.com sorts through the details.
