TTU Spring Evaluation Tracker: Weekend Updates

A report on which prospects Offensive coordinator/inside receivers coach Eric Morris (pictured above) and the other Texas Tech assistants are visiting, evaluating and actively recruiting during the critical spring evaluation period.

The coaches have been racking up the frequent flier miles the past couple weeks during the spring evaluation period which allows the assistants to visit prospects and watch them work out in practice at their respective schools.

Offers are flying out left and right, relationships with high schools are being formed or called upon and sleeper recruits are being found. The following is a compilation of updates from last weekend in the Spring Evaluation Thread in the RP INSIDER:

As far as 2017 guys who I've talked to where there is interest from Tech at OL but not an offer, here's a couple names:

Kevin Davis, OT/OG, Angleton (no profile)

Bryce Wade, OT, Eldorado (no profile)

A late qualifier OL/DL (he plays both) out of HS that could be in the mix is Hozey Haji-Badri out of Chantilly, VA. No profile, but here's his HUDL

Think they're looking at him at OL.

Welp, glad I said "think" in this post. Just got off the phone with him and the coaches are actually looking at him at 3-tech. Coach Patrick has actually been in contact with him since his UNT days last year.

His situation is kind of complicated - he will be spending a semester at prep this fall but will retain all 4/5 years of his eligibility like a normal 2017 prospect.

By the way, I spoke with 2017 OL Dennis Bardwell who was supposed to visit for the Spring Game before it was canceled and ended up not making it to Lubbock. He wants to visit the school this summer and would need to visit before making a commitment.

I'm set to talk this evening with North Mesquite DE Stephen Turner (6-foot-2, 230lbs) who is hearing from Tech. No profile, but here's his HUDL

Just spoke with Turner (he was at the fieldhouse and had some time to talk) and Coach Kevin Patrick will be by soon to evaluate him in person. An offer could follow shortly after that. Turner really likes Tech, went out to the football camp in Lubbock last summer, and would be interested in attending a Tech satellite camp this summer.

Turner is a 2017 prospect.

2018 ATH Kalon Barnes out of Silsbee TX just told me Coach Foster and Coach Eric Morris are coming to visit him on Tuesday. No profile, but here's his HUDL

They're recruiting him at WR.

He fast.

Coaches are set to visit another very fast out-of-state prospect in Chauncy Smart, out of Auburndale FL. He told me they're coming to see him sometime this week.

Smart ran a 10.86 100 in the Florida 3A state prelims against the wind.

Tech coaches stopped by the Metroplex by to visit 2017 Garland WR Josh Thompson (no profile, not the 2017 Nacogdoches CB Josh Thompson). Thompson told me he is "very" interested in Texas Tech.

Since it sounds like some of the coaches will be making a trip to Florida this upcoming week, here are some prospects that could be visited in person:

Dort just told me the coaches will be visiting him for sure. HUDL

Just got off the phone with 2017 JUCO DE Devontay Wheatley and Kevin Patrick and one other coach (probably either Morris or Gibbs) came to visit him at practice recently. He's interested in Texas Tech and graduates from Tyler JC this December with two years to play two. Not many other schools are in contact with him.

Just talked to 2017 DE/OLB David Anenih and he told me that Eric Morris came by to see him last month.

Anenih runs a 10.88-second 100-yard dash (Extremely fast - a much smaller IR prospect, Chauncy Smart, ran a 10.86) and anchors the 4x100.

He said he's very interested in Texas Tech, has family in Lubbock, and enjoys watching the Red Raiders play. ECU, UTSA, New Mexico, Rice, and Southern Miss have all offered. He reports interest from Michigan, Duke, Houston, and Texas Tech. He is 6-foot-3, 231 pounds.

There's a pair of Dallas Wilmer-Hutchins receivers getting interest from Texas Tech in Herb Sparks and Lewis Gibson. Coach Jones visited Wilmer-Hutchins last Monday and talked with both prospects in person. Gibson is getting looked at for DB, Sparks for inside receiver.

DM'd a bit with 2017 DB Kris McCune out of Dallas Christian and Coach Scott wtached him run some drills a couple weeks ago. No profile. 6-foot-2, 200 pounds, reports a 4.45 40-yard dash.

2017 Elgin ATH Tariq Buchanan says that the coaches will be coming out to see him this week. No profile. BYU has offered. 6-foot-2, 175 pounds.

2018 WR Maurice Wren out of Mesquite Horn says that Coach Morris will be in town this week to visit him in person. He is being recruited at receiver and holds an offer from SMU. He tells me he's "very interested" in Texas Tech and that they're in his top 3.

His teammate 2017 DB Christopher Hawkins told me that Gibbs was going to stop back by to run Hawkins through some drills last week but didn't get the chance to as Hawkins was lifting at the time.

2017 DB Quentin Brown II out of Conroe TX (6-foot-2, 190 lbs, reports a 4.61 40-yard dash) just told me that a coach from Texas Tech came out to watch him practice earlier this week. No profile, but Toledo, Kansas, and the Citadel have offered. Texas State and Navy are showing interest.

Talked a bit more with him and he really likes Texas Tech:

  • "I've been getting offered and recruited by out of state schools. Texas Tech is a good school, with a really good football program. And it's close to home. Those are important factors for me."

2018 Cedar Hill Longhorn OL Parker Cupp was visited by a Texas Tech coach a couple weeks ago (he couldn't remember who it was, only that it wasn't coach Hays). The coach told him they were very familiar with him, and he's interested in Tech. Obviously that would be a great pipeline for Tech to build.

Spoke with 2017 Winter Park (FL) WR Jordan Pouncey just now and Coach Jones will be down to visit him soon. When I asked him whether he was interested in Tech, he simply said "Very." Alabama, Georgia among those that have offered.

  • "Texas Tech is in the Big 12. Big 12 teams tend to pass a lot and Texas Tech passes like every play. Being a receiver I really like that."
  • On whether he knows if the coaches will extend an offer: "I really hope so."

Calvin Clater, a 2017 outside receiver prospect at Fort Worth South Hills, told me Emmett Jones will be coming by to see him practice in the middle of this upcoming week. Clater's received significant interest from Tech and I think they could pull the trigger and offer soon.

Just talked to 2017 JUCO CB Keisean Nixon out of Arizona Western on the phone and his recruitment is blowing up. He is very high on Texas Tech, though, citing his relationship with Coach Deshaun Foster.

Foster and the coaches are coming out to visit him in person later this month when he goes back home to California for the summer. Expect an offer to go out to him at that time. He'll have three years to play two.

We'll have a story this upcoming week, but Nixon is DEFINITELY one to watch because of his caliber and the position he plays.

Tech offeree and 2017 WR Bronson Boyd out of Arlington Oakridge was visited by Coach Jones and Coach Morris last Thursday. He says he hears from Texas Tech every day.

Boyd will be making his commitment in late June/early July, so his timeline is a little shorter than other 2017 prospects I've talked to. Definitely one to keep an eye on.
