Smith Adds Size, Physicality to TTU Secondary

RaiderPower.com caught up with Texas Tech 2016 defensive back signee Desmon Smith, out of Odessa (TX) Permian High School, shortly before he was due to report to the Red Raiders this summer.

Desmon Smith was one of the final pieces to Texas Tech's 2016 signing class and is expected to help fill a pretty big void in terms of size in the secondary.

The 6-foot-3 former Permian Panther is up to 201 pounds from 195 during his senior season and has a verified 40-yard-dash time of 4.55 seconds. Smith, who picked off four passes as a cornerback in 11 games last season, is expected to get a look at both safety and cornerback this summer.

Smith, who was recently visited by special teams coach Joe Robinson, said he might play some special teams next season as well.

"(The visit) went well with him, we talked about workouts and some of the other guys," Smith said. "We did talk about special teams but nothing was a sure thing just throwing ideas around."

Smith, who will major in business, is expected to move in this weekend and said the plan is for him to room with fellow signees Damarcus Fields and T.J. Vasher.
