Devodrick Johnson Talks Texas Tech, Overall Recruitment

Raider Power caught up with Dallas Kimball four-star athlete Devodrick Johnson who decommitted from Texas A&M and is set to announce his decision on Nov. 4.

Texas Tech's 2017 recruiting class is really taking shape now that the season is in full swing and National Signing Day is on the horizon. With some spots left on defense in this class, one blue-chip prospect who Texas Tech offered way back in April is close to making a decision, and says Texas Tech is still in the mix.

Devodrick Johnson out of Dallas Kimball, who at 6-foot-2, 220 pounds projects as a safety or linebacker at the next level, is still hearing from the Tech coaches after decommitting from A&M back in August.

"I've talked to [defensive backs] coach [Karl] Scott a lot, yes sir. I talk to [wide receivers] coach [Emmett] Jones at least every week."

How do the Red Raiders stand with the Scout300 member?

"Texas Tech, they stand up there pretty high. Coach Jones, I just feel like me being around him could make a big impact on my life. He would help me see things differently and help me succeed. I feel like he can help me develop as a man."

Johnson spoke more about his interest in Tech.

"The coaching staff is great. I feel like they can develop me as a player. I loved the campus when I went up on a visit. Things with Tech are pretty good."

Aside from the Red Raiders, Texas A&M, Cal, and Illinois are the three schools in his Top 10 he says are talking to him the most. Johnson recently announced he'll be taking an official visit to Illinois.

The Dallas defender spoke about his decision to decommit from the Aggies and his overall recruitment - noting that he hasn't made his decision yet, but will soon and will announce his decision on Friday, November 4th.

"With A&M, I decommitted, I just wanted to take time to think about it. No hard feelings, you know. I love all the schools in my Top 10. When it comes down to it, it's going to be a hard decision."

Johnson was asked why that particular date was chosen.

"It's actually our homecoming. There will probably be a ceremony [for my commitment] at the school."

The four-star defender, ranked as the #2 OLB in the state, plans on taking another visit to Lubbock this fall to check out a game at the Jones before making his decision.

"Yes sir, I plan on getting up there. I don't know yet, but maybe the OU game."

Devodrick Johnson holds offers from Arizona, Cal, Houston, Kansas, Illinois, Mississippi State, Missouri, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech, among others. He reports interest from Texas and TCU, among others.
