2018 DT Bobby Brown (Gabe Brooks / SCOUT)

Texas Tech will Go Heavy DL with 2018 Class

A compilation of notes, quotes facts and more on over 25 Texas Tech recruits, including several 2018 blue chip defensive linemen, such as Arlington Lamar rising senior defensive tackle Bobby Brown (pictured above), rated as the No. 2 DT in Texas in his class.

Hey guys, most of the offers that have been extended since the dead period ended have been at DL in 2018 so that's where I focused my efforts this time around. Here are tidbits and quotes from various interviews I did this week.

  • Spoke to 2018 Scout300 DE Jarell Cherry and he was pleasantly surprised by the LSU and A&M offers he received last week. Michigan has since thrown their hat in the ring for him, too. Despite the offers flooding in, he remains interested in Texas Tech and stays in contact with Coach Patrick on a routine basis. They talk about everything from football to life in general, and the defensive line coach stopped by to see him early in the open contact period.

  • Cherry plans to decide where he goes to school after taking all five of his official visits. He wouldn't commit to taking one of those to Tech just yet, saying it was too early, but he does plan on taking yet another unofficial visit to Texas Tech for the Junior Day in the spring (March 4th, the first day of spring practice).
  • Bobby "Tre" Brown, a four-star DT out of Arlington Lamar, was offered by Coach Patrick after an in-person evaluation yesterday. Brown has been hearing from Texas Tech since last summer, and we spoke on the phone to discuss the offer.
  • "That was a good way to start off the day!"
  • His thoughts on the Texas Tech offer: "I was very surprised. It's something to look into, because I plan on staying around Texas or in Texas. I don't plan on going very far, because my mom says she's staying in Texas. So I'm trying to look for schools that aren't over 8 hours away."

  • Thoughts on Coach Patrick: "He's a big, cool dude."
  • On if any schools are standing out to him: "I'd like to keep that to myself."
  • Brown has no plans to visit any schools this spring because he is focusing on participating in wrestling this spring.
  • Yet another 2018 defensive lineman to pick up a Tech offer was Jalen Redmond out of Midwest City, Oklahoma, after Coach Patrick came by to see him.
  • "The visit was good. I didn't know he was coming until last minute, and I was in basketball practice when he showed up. We talked about my stats this year, he was telling me about Texas Tech and their defense. He told me that he was new to the school. We were just talking, having a conversation. He's a good dude, he is so funny. Had me laughing the whole time. I really connected well with him. He's hilarious."

  • Thoughts on Tech: "I like Texas Tech, honestly. I don't really have anything bad to say about them. I watched them play a few times, but not much other than that."
  • On a potential visit to Tech: "Yes. I'll have to talk to mom about it, but yeah, I think I want to take a visit down there to see it. I want to take one to Texas, too."
  • Ron Tatum III was yet another 2018 defensive end to pick up an offer from Texas Tech. Tatum is a blue-chip prospect, holding offers from half the Big 12 and Alabama, among others.

  • "It seems like a great school, that I'd be able to fit into. I can't wait to come down there and visit Texas Tech. Possibly a junior day, or one of the games next season. It's a big one for me, I like this offer."
  • On a timeline for making his decision: "I'm not sure yet. I'm just going through the recruiting process and trying to see which school I'd fit into."
  • Finally, Dennis Osagiede is a 2018 DT that is on the rise. Coach Patrick stopped by his school on the 17th, and Osagiede says the visit went well.
  • "It went great. He just came to finally see how I look and person and watch me work out. He was just telling me that he's still recruiting me, and that he was glad he got to see me. Nothing much."

Various prospects were asked how the coaches' departures impact their thoughts on Tech:

  • AJ Carter: "No sir, not at all. I just want to meet the other coach that's coming to Texas Tech. It is what it is."
  • Keaontay Ingram: "Texas Tech will always be in mind, but it does have an effect because I do feel like he is the guy who recruited me."
  • D'Anthony Hopkins: "No, doesn't impact my thoughts on Texas Tech."
  • Titus Swen: "No it doesn't. I think it might be a different feel for the team, but at the end of the day if I go there, I'm there to ball out."
  • Desmond Nisby: "No sir! I've always wanted to play for Texas Tech."

A couple miscellaneous tidbits to wrap things up:

  • The last spot on offense is going to OL for sure. Chabastin Taylor, who Tech talked to a bit a couple weeks ago, will sign with K-State.
  • Kalon Gervin, a 2018 DB that is being recruited nationally, told me during the season he'd be visiting Texas Tech this spring. With the junior day finalized, I've reached out to him to see if that is still in the works.
  • 2018 DB Travian Blaylock out of Humble Atascocita (No profile, HUDL) tells me that Coach Scott and Coach Gibbs came by to see him last week.
  • "It went good. They seem like some good coaches."
  • Blaylock is also hearing from Houston, Baylor, and Oklahoma State.
  • Another 2018 DB hearing from Tech is Jevon Jones, a standout at Allen. Coach Scott hasn't come out to see him yet, but he says he's heard from Coach E. Jones.
  • Grand Prairie HS OT DeMarcus Marshall says Texas Tech came out to see him this week. Marshall is a prospect on the rise, with offers from Colorado and Kansas and is hearing from several other schools.
  • It looks like Texas Tech will be going after a TE in 2018, either from the JUCO ranks or HS. One kid to watch is Christoph Henle out of The Oakridge School in Arlington, who Coach Morris stopped by to see this week (the same school as Bronson Boyd)
  • I know there's some rumblings about David Anenih, but I would be shocked if he doesn't end up with Tech.
