The construction site of Texas Tech's Sports Performance Center, situated across a concourse from Jones AT&T Stadium and next to the Football Training Facility, caught on fire Wednesday afternoon.
A Lubbock policeman on the scene told InsideTheRedRaiders.com nobody was injured or hurt during the fire. A Texas Tech spokesman confirmed the fire started when a spark from a nearby weld burnt roofing material. The smoke billowing from the construction site could be seen for miles.
The university announced there was a fire at the SPC and warned to stay out of the area. InsideTheRedRaiders.com obtained footage of the fire while it was still blazing and captured the aftermath with smoke and sand still flowing out from the top of the structure.
InsideTheRedRaiders.com just happened to get an update from the athletics department on the progress of the construction earlier Wednesday stating the football indoor practice facility was expected to be completed and ready for use by August, but the rest of the structure would be completed at an unconfirmed later date.
A Texas Tech spokesman confirmed Wednesday evening the damage done to the steel structure by the fire was minimal and that a full damage assessment would be announced on Thursday.
