Blue Chip Defensive Tackle Keondre Coburn is the Exception to Texas Tech's Defensive Offer Rule

Blue chip defensive tackle Keondre Coburn out of Houston Westfield explains why he's interested in Texas Tech and dishes on how the offer from the Red Raiders took place.

Texas Tech issued a surprise offer ahead of the start of the spring evaluation period earlier this week when Houston Westfield nose tackle Keondre Coburn picked up his offer from Texas Tech.

Coburn, the No.1 rated defensive tackle in the state and the No. 79 overall prospect in the country, actually reached out to Tech first to get things rolling.

"I had a lot of interest in Texas Tech, so I hit up coach Jamison and said what's up, and after I told him I had interest in them he told me I have an offer from them. I was happy, any scholarship to me is a blessing, but I wanted the offer and he gave it to me. It was cool, I just have to get to know the coaches and all that because I was always wondering why they didn't talk to me."

Why was Coburn, who has offers from schools across the country, so interested in picking up an offer from the Red Raiders?

"To be honest, I know that they're really an offensive school that needs help on defense. They go to games and they score over 60 points, but the defense, they need players to help them win. If you score 60 points in a game you should win it. So I know it's a school that needs defensive help and it's a place that I could go right away and play. It's an Under Armour school and I like UnderArmour stuff, their uniforms are nice. I have friends that go to Texas Tech, too. I'm just starting to get to know them more and trying to learn the stuff about the school that I need to know."

So what are the next steps for Coburn and Texas Tech?

"I was talking to the coach about it, I'm going to try to check out a spring practice or something like that. I have practice April 1st, but it depends how everything goes. Sometime this month, the next week or two, I want to visit Tech. Something like that."

The 6-foot-1, 326-pound nose tackle prospect discussed what he hopes to learn about while on his upcoming visit.

"Academics, you know, that's the first thing you have to worry about, especially for after football. The coaching staff, the environment at Texas Tech, getting to know the college, just things like that."

Coburn discussed his relationship with defensive line coach Terrance Jamison, who is in his second month with Texas Tech.

"I've got to get to know him, but he seems like a pretty good coach that loves football. I'm planning on talking with him more on the phone tomorrow. He seems cool. He was telling me about Texas Tech. I just need to go up there to see the campus, check out the academics, stuff like that."

The Houston prospect discussed his process and timeline for making his commitment.

"I'm going to try to narrow things down soon, you know. A decision would probably be around Signing Day. I'm not so quick on the commitment, I'm just worried about the schools that I want to narrow it down to and stay focused on that part of it."

Keondre Coburn holds offers from Arkansas, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and UCLA, among others.
