Tech Hard and Heavy After JUCO QB

Raider Power caught up with (Reedley JUCO QB) Robert Johnson to talk about his performance in his team's season-opening win -- 38-23 over Antelope Valley -- as well as the latest details on the recruiting front.

Robert Johnson, already 1-0 as the starting QB for 2003 season, looks to go undefeated again in his second year for the Reedley Tigers. After winning every game during his senior year of high school, he's now won 28 straight.

Not too shabby...

In his first game of the current season, Johnson -- who claims 20 or more 'ship offers -- dominated from the pocket completing 23 passes on 30 attempts for 410 yards and 2 TDs. He also ran for 22 yards and 1 TD.

"I was trying to stay in the pocket and show teams I'm a pocket passer, too."

According to the 6-1, 195-pounder, ripping off big runs isn't so much a thing of the past as it is more about proving he can make all of the reads/progressions before tucking the ball and heading up field.

Johnson's off to a nice start as he looks to capitalize on last season's championship run.

"I think we have a good chance of winning another championship," Johnson said. "As long as we keep working hard, we have a real good shot."

Moving to Recruiting...

Last time we caught up with the dual-threat signal caller, Johnson said he might take one or two trips. The October 10th-12th weekend (when his team has a bye) was already marked down with the other expected visit to come after season's end...

That said, will Tech grabs one of the two official visits?

Johnson told RP, "Texas Tech's going to get one. K-State's probably going to get the other."

As we reported in the RP Club Member's Forum on the 28th of August, the Red Raiders are trying to get all four of the Reedley JUCO prospects to Lubbock the weekend they play Iowa State (October 10-12) and we think they have a decent shot to do just that.

"I've been talking with Sylvester (Brinkley), Charlie (Glover) and Marcus (Campbell) about going to Texas Tech on the 11th (of October). And there;s a good chance that we might all go."

Stay tuned...
