If Texas Tech is Wide Receiver U then Arlington (TX) Martin is Defensive End High.
In recent years under head coach Bob Wager and the Martin Warriors have produced defensive ends such as Myles Garrett, the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft last month, and Devonte Fields, the 2012 AP BIg 12 Defensive Player of the Year.
The Red Raiders have set their sights on Martin 2018 defensive end Spencer Trussell, who plans on visiting the campus this weekend.
"It's just the way we're coached," Trussell said. "We're coached with intensity, we have high standards and we are told to finish every play with 100-percent effort. That's just the way that I play and not only that, but from a team standpoint we play every duration of a game with full intensity. That's what gets us wins and that's how we get noticed."
Texas Tech defensive line coach Terrance Jamison has noticed Trussell. In fact, he offered the 6-foot-5, 225-pound defensive end a scholarship after noticing him during spring practice a couple weeks ago.
"After practice my coach told me I just got offered by Tech," Trussell said. "Aw man, I was pumped. I was psyched."
Trussell said he and Jamison talk 3-4 times a week and that the coach sees him as a hands on the ground defensive end or strongside defensive end in defensive coordinator David Gibbs' system.
"Ah man, he sounds like a very great guy and sounds like he knows what he's doing," Trussell said. "I'm looking forward to getting on campus."
Trussell's mom attended Texas Tech, but he admitted he knows little about the university and has never been to Lubbock. He's hoping to find out more this weekend during the visit.
"I'm not really looking for anything specific, but one thing that means a lot to me is what kind of relationship does the coaches have with the players," Trussell said. "Is it a hometown feel to me? That's pretty much it, that's all I look for. How do the coaches act around the players outside the program and inside the program."
Trussell, who said he plans on studying kinesiology in college, holds offers from Louisiana Tech, Texas Tech, Texas State, Tulane, Tulsa, UTSA and Arkansas State but added he's also hearing from TCU, Baylor and Notre Dame.
