After taking a big haul in 2017, Texas Tech has limited spots at linebacker in the class of 2018. One prospect who received an early offer is Xavier Benson, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound outside linebacker out of Pleasant Grove, Texas.
Benson discussed how the offer was extended.
"I was doing drills, there was Texas Tech and a few other colleges there at the school, they were watching me. Tech called my coach after practice, and my coach called me and told me they offered me."
The Metroplex prospect thinks highly of Texas Tech's football program.
"I think it's a great program, where you can compete and have fun. The coaches there can make you the best player you can be, and that's what I want to do."
So what is Benson looking for at the next level?
"I'm looking for a school that is caring, that wants the best for every athlete. I just want the best school, where I'm a good fit for the system and great academics. I want a degree that will set me up for life after football."
What is his timeline for making a decision?
"I really don't know yet. I'm going to wait until my senior year to decide because I know that God is going to bless me with more to come."
Benson plans on checking out Texas Tech soon.
"Yes, I'm going to take a visit there for sure."
The 2018 defender was asked about his role on the defense at Pleasant Grove.
"At Pleasant Grove, I really do a lot on the field, from covering, to rushing off the edge, filling gaps, setting up blocks to make the play, I just feel like I'm a really versatile player.
Xavier Benson holds offers from Arkansas State, Louisiana-Lafayette, North Texas, SMU, Texas State, Texas Tech, and Tulane, among others.
