2018 safety Shawn Preston (Billy Embody / SCOUT)

Texas Tech Offers Louisiana DB Shawn Preston

Texas Tech offered Louisiana St. James defensive back Shawn Preston on Thursday.

One defensive back prospect who picked up an offer from Texas Tech this spring is Louisiana Saint James 2018 safety Shawn Preston. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound prospect is seeing his recruitment begin to spark over the last couple weeks.

"It's kind of exciting, I just got offered by Arizona. I've got a lot of mid-majors like Colorado State, Louisiana Tech, UTSA, Memphis, SMU, schools like that, but I really don't have any particular favorites right now. Really just enjoying it, letting the offers come in, and when the time comes, I'll go from Top 10 to Top 5, and after Top 5 I'll figure out where I'm going."

Texas Tech running backs coach Jabbar Juluke and defensive backs coach Karl Scott went out to watch Preston and a teammate at practice recently and then offered him a scholarship on Thursday.

"They came and visited me and my teammate Glenn Brown. They said they liked us and were going to be in touch with us."

Preston had nothing but good things to say about the Red Raider football program.

"I love the program. I can see that the program has a winning tradition and an aspiration of going to bowl games and being on top. I see that they work hard, and grind, and I see that the program has a plan in place to be the best. I feel like the program is in a good direction there at Texas Tech, especially with getting coach Juluke there."

The safety elaborated on his relationship with Juluke, a Louisiana native.

"Coach Juluke and my dad played together at Southern, so I've been knowing coach Juluke since he was at Edna Karr, then he went to Louisiana Tech, then to LSU, then to Texas Tech. I remember coach Juluke first got the job, if I'm not mistaken, at Texas Tech, was there for like two or three weeks, then LSU called and he went there instead. But I think he likes it in Lubbock, he likes it up there."

Preston was asked what he is looking for in a school at the next level.

"I want a school that has aspirations of being great and going to big-time bowl games, I don't want to be part of a team that just settles for being better next year. If you were garbage one year and then one year you're just okay, that's not good enough for me. I want to be part of a team that is great and inspires others to do great things, together."

He went on:

"I want a family-oriented group that is player-led, not coach-led. If a coach has to tell you to do this or do that, that means that you don't want to do it by yourself, the coach is making you do it. And I don't want the coaches to make me do anything, I want the players to encourage me to do it and I want to do it myself. That's really what I'm looking for in a school."

Preston holds offers from Arizona, Arkansas State, Colorado State, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana-Lafayette, Memphis, SMU, UTSA, and Tulane, among others. He reports interest from Houston, Ohio, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and Vanderbilt, among others.
