Texas Tech added their second defensive pledge of the 2018 class, and fifth overall, Monday when Richmond (TX) Foster defensive lineman Cameron Valentine decided to pull the trigger and commit to the Red Raiders.
"What prompted it was that my family - my dad, he's gone up there for business and my mom really liked everybody up there, so they like it up there. My coaches thought it was a great fit. I thought about it, and had a great time on my visit, and it kind of just felt like home."
Valentine made his decision after recently taking an unofficial visit to Texas Tech to check out the campus, where he spent a lot of time with his future position coach.
"Coach Jamison, the defensive line coach. He's the one I spent the most time with. He was just telling me about the fans, how they're really loyal to Texas Tech and how the fans are the real deal. How the environment is on game days, and how this is a great atmosphere for student-athletes and how prestigious the facilities are. He said it's a great campus and the team is going to be good, it's on the upswing now. And then he told me how he wanted me to fit in along the defensive line."
The overall professionalism of the coaching staff helped seal the deal with him.
"My favorite part of the visit was just how professional the coaches were. I really liked that about them. Every question I had, they had an answer to, and if they didn't have the answer they would get it for me. And then how professionally the coaches carried themselves. They were great."
Valentine actually made his decision prior to his announcement, but held off until today to announce so that he could share the moment with his team.
"I mean, I already committed to Texas Tech. I'm just gonna wait until Monday so I can commit with my team - we start camp on Monday so I'm going to commit then."
The new commit understands the importance of recruiting other prospects to Texas Tech as a commit, and has already started hitting up fellow recruits about the Red Raiders.
"For sure. I'm talking to one of the linebackers that signed, asking all the recruits about how they like Texas Tech. It's going to be a nice recruiting class, the start of something special."
Valentine committed to Texas Tech over offers from Army, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, Navy, New Mexico, Tulsa, and UNLV, among others. He was receiving interest from Arizona State, Boise State, Houston, Kansas, Louisville, and Oklahoma State, among others.
