The Red Raiders lost a heartbreaker Saturday night in the final four seconds before a crowd of 38,746 at University Stadium in Albuquerque, N.M. With the game tied at 24-24 throughout the fourth quarter, Texas Tech failed to capitalize in the red zone despite big numbers by quarterback Sonny Cumbie and his receiving corps. The Lobos' 43-yard field goal in the last seconds of the game gave Tech their first loss of the season.

Cumbie put the ball up 70 times tonight for a total of 44 completions for 449 yards and a touchdown on a quarterback sneak in the first quarter. The Lobos defense blitzed throughout the game for a total of 20 times, forcing quick reads and short passes.

Inside receiver Trey Haverty replaced an injured Nehemiah Glover in the second half and had a career night with 8 receptions for 117 yards. Wide receiver Jarrett Hicks also put up good numbers with 9 catches for a team leading 150 yards and a touchdown. Running back Taurean Henderson had 11 carries for 31 yards, 7 receptions for 28 yards and his touchdown of the season. Receiver Cody Fuller had 6 catches for 36 yards.

New Mexico's Don Trell Moore rushed for 76 yards and Hank Baskett had 99 yards on 6 receptions.

Plagued by poor officiating throughout the game for both sides, a case for instant replay was made. At times, the confusion between officials was ridiculous.

New Mexico's Gabri Fulbright was ejected from the game for unsportsmanlike conduct in the second quarter after both teams received warnings for post-play conduct. Fulbright's celebration in front of the Tech bench earlier in the game was accompanied by a belligerent New Mexico crowd throughout the game.

The Red Raiders also lost a few key players to injury. Linebacker John Saldi left the game with an injury in the second quarter, reappearing in street clothes and a neck brace after the half. Glover failed to re-enter the game in the second half after taking several nasty hits early in the game. Henderson played with a wrapped left calf. Dek Bake was sidelined the entire game with an injury from earlier in the week, and center Dylan Gandy left the game for a short time with cramps.

Kicker Keith Toogood didn't make the trip this week, leaving Alex Trlica to cover kicking duties. Trlica failed to convert a 40-yard field goal attempt in the fourth quarter, despite connecting on earlier extra point kicks.
