Brian West Talks Auburn and Texas Tech

With the Texas Tech Red Raiders looking to solidify their DL depth both for the short- and long-term future, they wanted to sign at least five different prospects capable of contributing minutes up front. One such prospect they targeted, and landed, was the 6-3, 242-pound Beaumont Ozen DT Brian West. With his pledge listed as "soft" verbal, we caught up with the Texas Hot 100 prospect to discuss his recruitment to date...

"Right now, I'm committed to Texas Tech," said Texas Hot 100 No. 75 Brian West after taking an official visit to Auburn. "And, I'm also interested in Auburn."

Meanwhile, West still has an official visit on tap to Lubbock. And most expect that the Red Raider coaches will pull out all stops to firm him up. But as of now, they have a little battle on their hands.

"I would say that I have a top two in Texas Tech and Auburn," West said. "I'm still committed to Tech but I like Auburn too."

His reasons for keeping (his options open) and in touch with the Tiger coaches is in large part due to the trust and respect he has for his own high school defensive coordinator.

"My defensive coordinator is good friends with the Auburn defensive coordinator," West said. "And, he feels real comfortable with him and so I feel real comfortable also."

Another reason Auburn remains in the hunt is because of their recent success...

"They're winning a lot of games right now and they're No. 3 in the nation. You've got to like that."

Still, it is Texas Tech he remains committed to.

"I really like their academics. I want to major in business management and I think if I had to say, I think Texas Tech has the better academics."

Despite the above props West gave Tech, this is no doubt a two-team race that will continue possibly up until Signing Day, '05...
