Pleased with Win, Not with Performance

In Monday night's regular season tip-off for the Lady Raiders, 11,876 fans saw a team that looked young, and not ready to play. The Lady Raiders won Monday night's game against the Rice Lady Owls 66-55, with the final score being the prettiest part of the game. Monday night's game saw 7 lead changes throughout the game, and it was apparent that the Lady Raider's missed the leadership of Erin Grant.

"I was pleased with the win, but I was not that thrilled with the way we played," said Red Raider HC Marsha Sharp in the post-game press conference. "We weren't as focused as we need to be, and way too inconsistent."

Brooke Baughman ran the point and played 40 minutes Monday night filling in for the injured Grant. At times Baughman looked hesitant but Coach Sharp along with Baughman's teammates were happy with the way she kept playing and fighting the whole game. In the 2nd half of the game Baughman did come out playing much better, making improvements in her passing game, and leading the team down the court.

"Brooke did a very good job, and I'm very comfortable playing with her," Alesha Robertson talking about Baughman's play said.

"I think tonight made us mature, and it also helped Brooke's confidence in case we need her to fill in again," Cisti Greenwalt added.

Greenwalt also came alive in the 2nd half scoring 8 straight.

"She controlled the game in the 2nd half and other players fed off of her," Sharp said.

In the first half of Monday night's game Greenwalt went 2 for 8 with 5 rebounds, she ended the game shooting 7 for 18, 5 for 8 from the line, and pulled down 15 rebounds.

"In the 2nd half I changed my tempo up from the 1st half, defensively I was helping more in the 2nd half which really helped our team," Greenwalt explained.

Robertson finished the game shooting 6 for 9, 1 for 2 from the 3-point line and 5 for 6 from the line with 11 rebounds.

"When they doubled down on Cisti it left me open, and I thought it would be a real good chance for us to get our momentum going and give us a run, and it worked," Robertson revealed.

The momentum did change when Robertson hit a 3 pointer with 7:09 left in the game. The basket made sure that the Lady Raiders had momentum, and carried them to the win.

Darrice Griffin continues to impress on the defensive side of the ball grabbing 9 rebounds, 2 blocked shots, 4 steals, and shooting 3 for 5.

"Griffin continued to play well so we left her in the game," said Sharp on the freshman forward that played 35 minutes and provided a huge spark off the bench.

Griffin was very aggressive in Monday's game, and when she walks onto the court the team gets more aggressive.

Coach Sharp mentioned that the team will not practice heavily on free throw shooting even though the team made only 22 of 35 attempts.

"I don't want to make them paranoid about it," she said. "On a positive note we shot well at the end of the game."

One thing that will surely help the Lady Raiders – the return of Erin Grant.

"Erin is good to go and should play against Stanford Sunday," Sharp said.

The Lady Raiders have much to work on this week and not much time to do it in. The Lady Raiders will face Stanford on Sunday at 3 in California.
