Red Raiders Notch Wins On Diamonds

<p>Junior Bryan Wyatt and senior Cody Fuller led No. 22 Texas Tech to a 6-5 win at Dan Law Field Saturday afternoon, beating Northern Iowa.

In the baseball game, Junior Brian Wyatt pitched 5 2/3 innings of stellar relief while senior outfielder Cody Fuller went 3-for-3 to lead No. 22 Texas Tech to a 6-5 win over Northern Iowa on Saturday afternoon at Dan Law Field. >The win moves Texas Tech to 13-2 on the season while Northern Iowa falls to 4-5.

Northern Iowa forced Tech to go to its bullpen early for the second straight day as the Panthers rang up starter Billy Carnline for four runs on four hits in the top of the third inning. Down 4-2, Tech reliever Wyatt went to work for the Red Raiders as he pitched five straight shutout innings to allow the Tech offense a chance to regroup. The Red Raiders got a big inning in the bottom of the fourth as Tech scored three runs to go ahead 5-4.

Northern Iowa starter Aaron Jenkins loaded the bases in the fourth and walked in the first run before plating the tying run on a wild pitch. A sacrifice RBI by Cameron Blair went deep in left field to bring David Steffey in for the go-ahead run.

Senior second baseman Carey Avants gave Tech some much needed breathing room in the bottom of the eighth when he laced an RBI single up the middle to push the lead to 6-4.

Northern Iowa threatened in the top of the ninth when pinch hitter Curt Bradley hit leadoff home run to pull the Panthers to within one at 6-5. Tech went to its bullpen and brought out closer Tanner McElroy who ended the Panther rally by recording the final three outs for his third save of the season.

Wyatt (2-0) picked up the win as he allowed just one earned run on four hits in 5 2/3 innings of relief work. Aaron Jenkins (0-2) was saddled with the loss for Northern Iowa as he allowed five earned runs on four hits and walked six.

Texas Tech and Northern Iowa wrap this three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Dan Law Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
