The countdown is on for the signature of Denton (Texas) Ryan quarterback James Battle.

"I'm really excited about next season and the recruiting process," said Battle, a junior, who completed 132-for-214 passes for 2,136 yards passing en route to a perfect 15-0 record and 4A Division I state championship this season. "Right now, I'm busy preparing for another state title."

Several schools have already expressed interest in Battle (6-2, 190, 4.5) and next fall he will be one of the most highly-touted prep quarterbacks nationally.

"I've gotten letters from all over the country," said Battle, who threw 25 touchdown passes and only five interceptions this season. "Louisiana State and Boston College have give me the most attention."

However, Tech may be the early leader for Battle.

"I've got a cousin who plays rugby at Tech," said Battle. "He may go out for football next season. He keeps telling me that Coach Leach is cool and that Tech is the place for me. I'm very interested."

Battle is also intrigued by Tech's wide-open offensive scheme.

"Tech's offense gives the quarterback plenty of chances to make plays," said Battle. "I love to put the ball in the air and in their offense you get plenty of opportunities to do that."
