This talented junior tight end snagged 41 receptions for 630 yards last season. He played an instrumental offensive role for Austin Westlake, which lost 38-24 to Lufkin in the Class 5A Division II state championship.
Emfinger's Evaluation: "Joey is a real tight end phenom. He plays on one of the top passing teams in Texas and averaged nearly 15 yards per reception last season.
"He's got great size and speed for a tight end. Joey injured his knee in the season finale last season, so his injury will be tested extensively this spring, but he should be OK.
"He's got a tremendous amount of upside potential as a pass catcher, but he's already a very good blocking tight end. He should be a national recruit."
*****************FEBRUARY 26 UPDATE*******************
JG: What schools have contacted you?
JT: I've got a lot of letters, but Texas, Purdue, Stanford, A&M and UCLA have shown the most interest."
JG: What's your opinion on Coach Leach and Texas Tech?
JT: "They've always had a solid football program. Tech is definitely a school that I'll check out."
JG: Does Tech's offensive attack key on your strengths?
JT: "It's huge for me to get to play in a passing offense. I'm more of a pass-catching tight end, than a blocker."
JG: Who do you compare yourself to as a tight end?
JT: "I think I play like (former Miami Hurricane) Jeremy Shockey."
JG: What sets you apart from other tight ends?
JT: "I have good hands. I can catch anything around me."
JG: "How much can you bench and squat?
JT: "I bench 260 and squat 340."
JG: Thanks for your time tonight.
JT: "Sure, anytime."
