2002 Spotlight: LucQuente White

Midland High guard talks about his decision to walk-on at Texas Tech in an exclusive RaiderInsider.com interview.

************PG LUCQUENTE WHITE (6-1, 165)*************

A three-year starter, White averaged 19.7 points, seven rebounds and 6.5 assists as a senior for Midland High, which made the playoffs and finished 24-7 this season.

During his junior year, White averaged 16 points, six rebounds and six assists.

Thayer's Take: "LucQuente will be an impact player for Tech. He sees the floor well and aggresively attacks the rim, but can also shoot the long ball. He strives to get his teammates involved offensively and prefers to lead by example. His ability to score and unselfish play will be valuable assets."

*****************MARCH 25 UPDATE*******************

TS: First of all, congratulations on your decision and welcome to the Red Raider family.

LW: "Thanks. I'm really excited about playing basketball for Coach Knight and Tech."

TS: Your high school coach (Jack Stephenson) describes you as a "combo guard." Will you play both positions (point and shooting) in college, or does Coach Knight have a specific position for you?

LW: "I'd think that I'll probably end up playing point guard."

TS: What areas of your game are major strengths?

LW: "The way I see the court and my ability to shoot the basketball."

TS: What areas of your game do you need to improve to adapt to Big 12 basketball?

LW: "I definitely need to get stronger and work on my ball handling."

TS: What are your plans for this summer? Will you be in Lubbock?

LW: "I'm thinking about starting summer school in Lubbock and then just working out everyday, fine tuning my game."

TS: What was your impression of Tech and Coach Knight?

LW: "I was really impressed with Tech. I think they have a great staff. They really showed alot of interest in me, which I appreciated."

TS: What other schools did you consider and how do you feel about walking on?

LW: "New Mexico State, South Plains Junior College and some other schools on the east coast. I'm really excited to be able to play for Coach Knight and Tech and stay close to home at the same time."

TS: Has Coach Knight talked with you about redshirting?

LW: "No, he said if I work hard this summer and continue to improve throughout the year, I'll have an opportunity to play."

TS: You faced Midland Lee junior Drew Coffman twice this season. What are your thoughts on his recent verbal commitment to Tech and his overall game?

LW: "I think he's a great player and I look forward to playing with him."

TS: Thanks for your time LucQuente and once again congratulations.

LW: "No problem, have a good night."
