Monday Practice Report

August 22nd Practice Report

Practice Conditions
  •
Once again Warm, not too hot (Perfect day for TEXAS TECH football)
  •

Adam was sick today, so I was the only one able to take notes so stick with me.

  •
Moved to the Jones halfway through practice.

Individual Drills

  •
Not much new to report here, will say that our team has incredible speed.  We have to be one of the fastest teams in Div. 1 football.  We may not be the biggest, but we are surely one of the fastest.

Screen Drills
  •
Hodges and Harrell still appear to be getting equal reps during this drill even though Cody is the starter.
  •
Look for Filani and Amendola to get the majority of screen passes.
  •
The screens will be a big help in not allowing the opposing safeties to sit back in pass coverage all game, opening up the deep threat.

1-1 Passing Drills

  •
Amendola had a nice grab of Dustin Culpepper.
  •
B. Douglas seems to have trouble adjusting to the ball after it has been thrown.
  •
R. Johnson made a grab today with two defenders hanging all over him.  REALLY impressive.
  •
LA. Reed made a real nice catch on a out and up, really stretched to catch the ball.
  •
J. Hicks put a move on Naziruddin that made him look silly.  Hicks made a little move and was ten yard past Naz before he knew what happened.
  •
M. Johnson continues to shine.  He is making all the plays that will get him onto the field this year.
  •
Lots of good fade routes to the corners today from both QBs.  They seemed really comfortable today.
  •
E. Morris made a nice catch on the one and turned it into a touchdown.
  •
R. Johnson made a one handed catch today in the back of the end zone that was tipped by a defender.
  •
R. Johnson made a real nice grab in the corner of the endzone.
  •
Very few dropped balls today.  If the ball was catchable it was caught.
  •
Amendoal really looks good.  He seems to have gained a step or two from last year.

Special Teams
  •
No missed extra points today.
  •
Toogood seems to still have the kick off duties.  He is putting it one or two yards deep everytime.
  •
Trilica is money from 35 and in.  Its outside of this that things begin to get a bit hairy.
  •
Reyes continuing to look good on his punts, nothing new to report here.

7-7

  •
Not much to report here.  Hodges got about 80% of the reps and looked ok.  You could tell he was nervous a little.  I have more to report in 11-11 drills. I was interviewing Coach Wylie during 7-7 Sorry for the shorter report.

11-11
  •
This drill was done in Jones Stadium, it was between the first team O and the first team D.
  •
On the first play G. Aycock blitzed and caused Hodges to sail it high to Filani in the flats.
  •
Pass protection was phenomenal today.  There were some breakdowns, but for the most part it was really good.
  •
T. Henderson made a nice little run for seven yards and Ken Scott did a good job of pursuing the ball to make the tackle.
  •
Kegans missed a block on Stratton on a screen pass that lead to Brock tackling S. Woods for a four or five yard loss.
  •
LA. Reed played really well today.  He made several really nice catches in coverage.
  •
The Offense ran some no huddle today.
  •
Filani was playing out of his mind today.  He caught five or six passes and two touchdowns.
  •
Calen Shearer made a nice pop on Bristol causing him to lose a short pass.
  •
Cody showed his mobility by rolling to his right out of the pocket and found Filani wide open for a touchdown.
  •
Hodges did hold the ball on a play that he should have just thrown away.
  •
Filani made a nice play on a WR bubble screen.
  •
Bristol continues to work the seam pass and get positive yards.
  •
Ken Scott made a nice sack on Harrell.
  •
Harrell still seemed hesitant to unleash it down field.  He did have a nice play towards the end of practice where he rolled out to his left and hit Amendola in the end zone on the run.
  •
The O-line seemed to be doing well on run blocking.  There were several 6-7 yard runs today.

Closing words

Sorry for the shorter report, like I said Adam was sick (wishes he could have come) and so I was limited in what I could watch.  I found out some information on Meeks.  He is away taking care of personal business before school starts.  He is still with the team and is expected back before Monday.  It has nothing to do with injury.  Also, Hudler was practicing and looked to have no ill effects from whatever it was that keep him out of practice Saturday.  Saldi was seen wearing a hard cast.  Hufman continues to practice, but is not wearing shoulder pads or making contact.  Did break up a pass and fall on his shoulder, he bounced right up and continued with practice.  As you all know Hodges is the starting QB.  I have some of the audio from his statements to the press hopefully it is clear enough to put up.  Also, look for my interview with Coach Wylie and Danny Amendola.  Thanks, tomorrows practice report will be better.
