Red Raiders Gun Down Bearkats 80-21

Texas Tech improves to 2-0 after beating Sam Houston State

Cody Hodges had another impressive outing, leading Texas Tech to a victory over Sam Houston State, 80-21. Cody threw for 429 yards and 5 touchdowns on 25-38 passing with no interceptions. Redshirt freshman Graham Harrell came in the game early in the 3rd quarter and continued the Red Raider air show by throwing for over 200 yards.

After sitting out the Red Raiders first game against Florida International, Jarrett Hicks didn't seem to miss a beat by catching a touchdown pass on Texas Tech's first drive. Hicks, along with fellow receiver Joel Filani, caught 2 touchdowns passes each from Hodges. Hodges' favorite target for the second game in a row was Robert Johnson who reeled in 8 passes for 207 yards.

Taurean Henderson tied the school record for TD's in a career after he rushed for 3 scores today. He managed to get 54 yards on the ground and another 33 through the air before Shannon Woods took over after Tech's first drive in the 3rd.

The defense looked very impressive today by holding SHSU to only 7 points and 72 yards in the first half. Ex-Tech Quarterback Phillip Daugherty did come in the game in the 2nd half and led the Bearkats to two 80 yard touchdown drives, but most of Tech's starters had already been pulled from the game. Even though mostly second and third string defensive players were in the game, Coach Leach still called a "Come to Leach" timeout to make sure the intensity stayed high. Leach always expects his players, starters or backups, to play with heart and determination for all four quarters no matter what the scoreboard says.

Next week the Red Raiders take on Indiana State to finish off their non-conference slate.
