Tech Survives Islanders 14-7

Junior second baseman <b>Joel Buchenauer</b> went <b>4-for-5</b> with <b>two</b> RBIs and <b>two</b> runs scored during <b>Tech's</b> 14-7 win over <b>Texas A&M-Corpus Christi</b> on Friday night at Dan Law Field.<p> <br>

Junior outfielder Scooter Jordan opened the first inning with a single to left field and then scored Tech's first run on a wild pitch by Islander starter Jimmy Hamon.


Later in the inning, junior right fielder Travis McElroy extended Tech's lead to 3-0 lead with his third home run this season. Senior designated hitter Nick Blankenship followed with a solo shot, his 14th this season, for Tech's first back-to-back dingers this season.


Angel Velazquez and Blair Borque plated back-to-back solo homers for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (16-26) in the second inning, which cut Tech's lead to 4-2.


In the bottom of the second, senior shortstop Gera Alvarez extended his hitting streak to 26 games with a two-run double to center field.


Tech (29-16) added three more runs in the fourth and fifth inning to push the lead to 9-2.


Texas A&M-Corpus Christi mounted a serious comeback in the top of the seventh with five runs on six hits to cut the Tech lead to 10-7.


Buchenauer picked up his third hit in the bottom of the seventh on a triple to deep right field, which plated two Tech runs and pushed the lead to 12-7.


Steve Gooch (5-2) secured the win with 6 2/3 innings of work, despite allowing 10 hits and seven earned runs. Jimmy Hamon (5-6) suffered the loss after being tagged for eight hits and eight earned runs in four innings.


Tech and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will play the second game of their three-game set tomorrow afternoon. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Dan Law Field.
