2003 Spotlight: Byron Alfred

Port Arthur Memorial's Byron Alfred is the best offensive lineman on potentially one of the best teams in Texas next season. He logged 76 pancake blocks as a junior and plans to tally more as a senior. He has tremendous work habits and a great work ethic.

On film, Alfred (6-3, 275, 5.1) is a very dominating offensive tackle and even if he doesn't get a pancake block, he's still down field trying to make a second block. He's a very intense player who gets more intense as the game progresses.

"After working very, very hard last summer, I showed up 25 pounds lighter than the year before," said Alfred. "My brother, Johnny Alfred, was a major college recruit in 1998. He had more "God-given" talent than I have, but I was blessed with great work habits and a great work ethic."

Last season, Alfred played against an All-State defensive lineman and in that game, he recorded an amazing 11 pancake blocks.

"That game was probably my best game ever," said Alfred.

Alfred carries a fine 3.98 GPA in the classroom and he's already scored a 1090 on his SAT. He likes Texas Tech, Houston, Tulane, LSU, Texas A&M, and Rice. He will attend summer camps at all of his favorite schools.

I really like this kid and his tremendous upside potential.
