Marsha Sharp Announces Retirement

Lady Raider head coach Marsha Sharp announced her retirement from the women's basketball program at a press conference this afternoon. She will continue to coach through the rest of this season.

Coach Sharp was planning on making the announcement at the end of the season so the focus of this year would be on the players and not her. Marsha spoke with athletic director Gerald Meyers about her retirement in early October of last year, but asked to keep it close to the belt until season's end.

During this afternoon's press conference, Coach Sharp expressed her disdain for the members of the media who leaked the story before they were supposed to. The first announcement about her retirement came from Brian Davis of the Dallas Morning News at 11:09 am this morning.

Since the news had already leaked, Marsha decided to hold a press conference to make the announcement and to also let her players know the circumstances. She met with the players at 1:30 pm to make them aware of the announcement she was about to make.

Although the exact reasons for her retirement still remain unclear, she said "I just felt it was time for me to pursue other opportunities."

There will be a national search for a new head coach, yet they are not ruling out hiring someone who is already with the program.

Coach Sharp will be dearly missed by the entire Red Raider nation. We're very thankful for all that she has done for the university both academically and as a coach and role model for all the young women who have come through the Lady Raider Program.
