The No. 25 ranked Texas Tech football team worked out on
the field inside Jones AT&T Stadium on Thursday afternoon for what will be the
team's final practice before Saturday night's season opener at home versus SMU.
After opening practice with a special teams period, the coaching staff pumped in
a series of simulated crowd noises that played throughout the sound system
inside the stadium.
The second half of practice featured this season's first installment of "Thursday Night Football", a live scrimmage between walk-ons and underclassmen. Freshman quarterback Taylor Potts looked sharp throughout the session and connected with inside receiver Kelly Hildebrandt for the scrimmage's only touchdown. Arizona State transfer Derek Shaw took his first reps at quarterback and was welcomed to the team by defensive back Brent Nickerson who intercepted one of his initial attempts inside the 10-yard line.
The Red Raiders will be off on Friday before welcoming the Mustangs to Jones AT&T Stadium for Saturday night's contest. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the radio throughout the Texas Tech Sports Network.
QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH MIKE LEACH
On the tempo of Thursday's practice:
"I felt like we started slow initially, but I thought we picked it up towards the end and I was happy with the results."
On the adjustments the team will make in the absence of receivers Michael Crabtree and Jarrett Hicks:
"We'll just have to play other people but there won't be any major adjustments. I think L.A. Reed and Todd Walker will get in there and I'm confident they can get the job done. Todd's had a couple good weeks of practice and I think they are both capable of taking on bigger roles."
