Wednesday Practice Report

The Texas Tech Red Raiders (2-1, 0-0) practiced in helmets and shoulder pads today for more than two hours, continuing their preparations for this weekend's non-conference showdown with Southeastern Louisiana at Jones AT&T Stadium.

Mike Leach's team again opened practice with a series of individual drills, refining the fundamentals at each position. With an emphasis on "tempo", the offensive skill players then worked through a pass skeleton against a group of scout team defenders. Reserve quarterback Chris Todd found wide receiver Todd Walker on a fade route in the endzone on the second to last play of the period. On the defense's practice field, cornerbacks Marcus Bunton and Jamar Wall recorded interceptions against the scout team offense.

The Red Raiders also worked on special teams for the third time this week, focusing on kickoffs and kickoff returns in the midst of what was a strong wind this afternoon in Lubbock. Senior Keith Toogood, who boasts a 73% touchback percentage through three games so far this season, was forced to kick into what was more than 25 mph wind. "It was tough, the wind was definitely a factor and a lot of the kicks were short," he said.

In the brief team period of practice, quarterback Graham Harrell completed three of his four pass attempts. On his final play, he escaped a strong pass rush and threw across the field to receiver Landon Hoefer near the sideline.

The Raiders will practice again on Thursday, continuing to prepare for Tech's first ever meeting with Southeastern. "From what I've seen on film, they look like an aggressive defense that attacks the ball and I'm sure they'll be ready to give us their best," running back Shannon Woods said.

Saturday night's game will also mark Southeastern's first ever contest against a member of the Big 12 conference. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on the radio on all of the affiliates across the Texas Tech Sports Network.
