Recruiting Rundown: Defense

Signing day is just 9 days away, which will mark the day high school prospects can officially sign their letters of intent to attend Texas Tech. The Red Raiders are bringing in 2 huge defensive tackles in Colby Whitlock and Bobby Agoucha. RaiderPower.com breaks down these players and the rest of the commits on the defensive side of the ball.

Tyrone Sonier, Defensive End (**) - Physical specimen at 6 feet 2 inches and 225 pounds, could either play rush end or outside line-backer. Fast at 4.6, he has the speed to excel at either position and his frame could support the additional weight of Division 1 defensive line.

Jonathan Hollins, Defensive Tackle (***) - Signed last season but went to Hargrave Junior College, the trip seems to have improved his skills. A little light at only 265 pounds but has the height at 6 feet 3 inches tall to add additional weight, could contribute immediately in an undersized tackle role similar to that of Donald "Dek" Bake.

Bront Bird, Safety/Line-Backer (**)- Incredibly tall safety at 6 feet 4 inches tall and 201 pounds, could easily add the weight needed to play outside or inside linebacker.

Colby Whitlock, Defensive Tackle (**)- Very good sized defensive tackle at 6 feet 3 inches tall and 290 pounds, will most likely see immediate playing time to help with depleted defensive line depth. His strength can make him a force in the middle with the correct "bull-dog" mentality.

De'Shon Sanders, Corner Back (***)- Mid-term Junior College transfer already on campus in Lubbock, has terrific size and speed at 6 feet  inch, 200 pounds, and runs a 4.43 forty time. Should compete in the spring for the open corner back position with the graduation of former Red Raider standout, Antonio Huffman.

David Neill, Defensive End (***) - Strong and powerful defensive end with room to grow at 6 feet 5 inches and 245 pounds. Could easily add the weight to play defensive tackle or work on agility to become run stuffing defensive end.

Taylor Charbonnet, Safety (**) - Younger brother of current Red Raider safety Daniel Charbonnet, is another safety built in the same mold. 6 feet flat and 170 pounds make him a little on the light side, he is a very quick to react safety and a sure tackler.

Brandon Sharpe, Defensive End (Unranked) – JuCo defensive end of Fresno Community College.  Sharpe along with De'Shon Sanders have the best chances to see the 2 deep during the 2007 season.

Bobby Agoucha, Defensive Tackle (Unranked) – This guy simply came out of nowhere.  He moved from Katy High School to Oklahoma City in between his junior and senior year and flew underneath the radar of most schools.  Agoucha has a tremendous motor and will give 100% every play.  Agoucha and Whitlock give us 2 great DT's for the 2006 class.

Jonathan LaCour, Kicker (**)- Outstanding specialist athlete, he will look to help offset the loss of both Keith Toogood and Alex Reyes. 2005 winner of the Lone Star Kicking Challenge and taking the overall award for punting in 2006, LaCour will most likely see immediate competition with the other punters on the roster and while he might be a specialist, at 6 feet 2 inches and 190 pounds, he is not to be taken lightly.
