Breaking Down the Class

The signing of the 2008 class has come and gone, but not without a few twists and turns. The Red Raiders lost DE Brian Christopher to Arkansas and LB Keanon Cooper to Minnesota, but managed to sign the rest of their commitments on Wednesday morning. RaiderPower will be breaking down the entire class and up first is the offense.

Joe King- Offensive Tackle, Putnam City North, Oklahoma City, Okla. The 6 foot 6 inch tall, 300 pound offensive tackle is a little light, at least when compared to the current Texas Tech offensive linemen. Look for King to come in and red shirt to add muscle to his already imposing bulk and most likely play offensive tackle, though guard is not completely out of the picture.

Cornelius Douglas- Cornerback (Inside Receiver), Lawton High, Lawton Okla. While Douglas is listed by Scout as a cornerback, Texas Tech coaches are planning on using the shifty 5'9" 180 pounder as an inside receiver. With moves and a style of play that suits the Air Raid offense, Douglas might become a candidate for early playing time at the H inside receiver position, if he can grasp the Air Raid offense quickly.

Deveric Gallington- Offensive Guard, Richland High, Richland Hills, Tx. 6 foot 4 inch tall offensive guard carries 330 pounds and looks to have the size needed to play on the Air Raid offensive line. The depleted offensive line depth has been restored by the class of 2007 along with the class of 2008. Gallington will most likely redshirt along with fellow offensive linemen Joe King and Terry McDaniel.

Terry McDaniel- Offensive Tackle, New Diana High, New Diana, Tx. An already imposing individual at 6 feet 6.5 inches, McDaniel is in the mold of the current Red Raider offensive tackles and looks to be the most ready to see the field early, though that will depend on his showing in summer workouts.

Harrison Jeffers- Running Back, Eisenhower High, Lawton, Okla. Undoubtedly the best offensive recruit in this class, Jeffers is the real deal when it comes to playing running back. Look for Jeffers to immediately be in the mix for playing time at running back, though he might red shirt if the coaching staff feels that Baron Batch, Aaron Crawford, and Kobey Lewis can handle the load.

Donnie Carona- Kicker,
Monsignor Kelly HS, Beaumont, Tx. Carona will have big shoes to fill with the graduation of Alex Trilica. Carona has a booming leg and is very accurate, and will be counted on to pick up where Alex Trilica left off. Trlica was known for being cool under pressure and having the abilit to make long field goals. It will take Carona a year or two to catch up to where Trlica was at on field goals, but his kick off ability should be an improvement starting on day one.

Seth Doege- Quarterback, Frenship High School, Frenship, Tx. The earliest commit of the 2008 class, Doege has battled through two knee injuries and should be another in a long line of effective passers for head coach Mike Leach. Doege will undoubtedly red-shirt this year and then provide depth the next few seasons before competing with Stefan Loucks for the starting job after the 2010 season.
