Texas Tech Defeats UNC Wilmington 85-76

The Texas Tech Red Raiders (1-0) opened the regular season with a victory over the University of North Carolina Wilmington Seahawks (0-1). Texas Tech ended up with 4 players scoring in double digits.

The 1st half was closely played, until Texas Tech was able to go on a run in the closing minutes of the half. This run was highlighted by a long Will Chavis 3-pointer as time expired. This shot gave Texas Tech a 45-33 halftime lead.

In the 2nd half Texas Tech was unable to pull away from UNC Wilmington. Some great shooting helped the Seahawks stay in the game. Despite this impressive shooting, the Red Raiders were able to maintain their lead for the entire second half. The Red Raiders won by a final score of 85-76.

Offense
The Red Raiders didn't play great offensively, but they did score enough points for the victory. UNC Wilmington spent almost the entire game playing a zone defense, something that caused problems for the Red Raiders last season. Andre Emmet led the Red Raiders with 23 points in the game. Kasib Powell scored 19 points for the Red Raiders. This team could be very good offense. Most of the players have good range on their jumpers, which should compliment the motion offense nicely. The biggest problem offensively is still players standing around. When everyone is moving, the offense works well. When players start standing around the Red Raiders usually end up taking bad shots. This problem should work itself out with some practice, and playing a few more games. There was good ball movement though. 17 assists on 30 field goals is pretty good for this early in the season. Look for this efficiency to improve even more as the team settles down.

Defense
The defense had a tough night, facing a UNC Wilmington team that had some excellent shooters. One problem was defensive rotation. Several times throughout the game, the Texas Tech defense would be too slow rotating, leaving a UNC Wilmington player with an open jump shot. Another big problem was rebounding. Rebounding was decent on the offensive end because of the zone defense played by UNC Wilmington. On the defensive end it was another story. UNC Wilmington got 10 of 24 rebounds while on offense. This number is too high, especially when you consider how small the Seahawks were. Texas Tech needs to initiate contact with their block outs whenever the ball is shot. It is critical that this problem is fixed before conference play starts.

Highlights
Andre Emmet – Andre Emmet is a special player on offense. He has the ability to take most players off the dribble. If opposing defenses play off him, he will step back and make the jumper. It makes Emmet a tough player to guard. Emmet had 23 points and 5 rebounds in tonight's game. Emmet will be a key factor in the Red Raider's success this season.
Kasib Powell – Kasib Powell is probably the best all around player on the Texas Tech team. His hard work on both ends of the court usually pays off in a number of ways. Tonight Powell had 19 points and 8 rebounds. Powell was the best player on the court for the second half.
