Red Raiders defeat UTEP 83-60

The Texas Tech defense had a big game to help the Texas Tech Red Raiders (3-0) defeat the Texas-El Paso Miners (1-2) by a score of 83-60. The Red Raiders had 41 of their 83 points off turnovers.

Texas Tech struggled offensively early in the game, but a 19-0 run gave the Red Raiders a 16point lead. Texas Tech would extend their lead to 49-31 by the end of the first half.

In the second half Texas Tech never let UTEP get back into the game. The miners did get within 13 points midway through the second half, but never got closer. Texas Tech won by a final score of 83-60

Offense

Texas Tech's half court offense wasn't working great during the game, but it didn't really need to because of the 41 points off turnovers. Andre Emmett led all scorers with 22 points on 10 of 18 shooting. Four other Red Raiders ended up in double digits. Pawel Storozynski scored 13 points, Robert Tomaszek scored 11, Kasib Powell and Nick Valdez scored 10 points.

Defense

The Texas Tech defense was impressive against UTEP. The Red Raiders were successful in applying pressure to the UTEP offense, resulting in 16 steals and 31 turnovers. Nick Valdez led the way with an impressive 7 steals. If Texas Tech can continue to play tough defense on the perimeter, opposing teams will have a tough time. The post defense could still use some work, but it is improving.
