Tech downs Southeastern Louisiana, 74-63

The Texas Tech Red Raiders (5-0) defeated the Southeastern Louisiana Lions (1-3) on Tuesday night at the friendly confines of the United Spirit Arena to remain undefeated on the season.

John Roberson led Tech in scoring with 20 points, Alan Voskuil added 18 points, and D'walyn Roberts had a huge game, racking up 13 points. Roberts also had three blocks and nine rebounds, and was honored as the RadioLab Player of the Game on the Texas Tech Television Network.

In the very even, back-and-forth first half, both teams shot 42% from the field and had 29 rebounds. Southeastern Louisiana scored 11 points on 10 Texas Tech turnovers. "We've got to quit playing scared and get aggressive and go after it," said Coach Pat Knight at the half. We're over-passing. If you're open, shoot the ball, quit being scared. Stop making that extra pass because it's turning into a turnover."

An interesting key stat was that the Lions had led at halftime of all three of their previous games this season, but only had a 1-2 record to show for it. They would continue the trend of relinquishing their lead and not finishing the game on top.

Whatever it was that Coach Knight told the Red Raiders at halftime, it worked. Tech looked more relaxed and began the 2nd half strong to go on a 9-2 run which included a couple of three-pointers from Alan Voskuil. The Lions pulled within 7 to make it 68-61 at the 3:27 mark on a three by Brandon Fortenberry, but would not get any closer as Tech would close out the game on a 6-2 run. This was a slower-paced game than what the Red Raider Nation witnessed in the first four contests of the season. There were even a few shot-clocks that sounded, apparently indicating there were longer possessions. The Play of the Game tonight consisted of Alan Voskuil grabbing a rebound and executing a nifty behind-the-back pass to John Roberson down court for a lay-up.

"It was a little violent…just playing," joked John Roberson when asked what the mood in the locker room was like at halftime. "Pat was trying to get us going. The coaches can only do so much. We got everyone together, got on the same page, and did what we were supposed to do."

Brandon Fortenberry led South Eastern Louisiana in scoring with 13 points, while Chris Cyprian added 10.

These first 5 games of the season have been great experience in preparing for the battle the Red Raiders will face this Friday night, against the 4th ranked Pittsburgh Panthers in the semi-finals of the Legends Classic Tournament. The game will take place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey at 7:30pm eastern / 6:30pm central and will be televised on HDNet.
