Red Raiders Roll Over Aztecs, 75-63

The Texas Tech Red Raiders (10-1) finished their non-conference schedule with a 75-63 victory over the San Diego State Aztecs (8-4). Nick Valdez played an important role in the victory with a career high 21 points.

The Aztecs used good outside shooting to keep pace with Texas Tech in the first half.  The Red Raider offense was working as well.  The Texas Tech offense allowed the Red Raiders to take a 42-38 lead at the half.

Texas Tech dominated the second half.  After a 10-0 run to start the second half, the outcome was never really in question.  The Red Raider defense was able to hold the Aztecs to just 25 points in the second half.  Texas Tech won by a score of 76-53.

The offense played a good game tonight.  Kasib Powell led all scorers with 22 points.  Nick Valdez had a career high 21 points off the bench.  Andre Emmett finished the game with 16 points.  Valdez was the biggest story offensively.  If he wasn't scoring, he was making passes to setup shots.  The offense could benefit from more patience in some situations, but overall the offense looks good right now.

The Red Raiders showed off their defensive prowess tonight.  Texas Tech forced the Aztecs into 24 turnovers.  These turnovers fueled the Red Raiders' transition game.  Valdez had the best game defensively with 4 steals, but the whole team played solid defense.  The Red Raiders are extremely good at taking advantage of any mistakes by the opponent.  Texas Tech's opportunistic defense should cause problems for some of the higher tempo teams in the Big 12.
