Texas A&M was able to stay close for the first five minutes of the game. The Aggies were able to get within 1 point at the 15:12 mark before the Lady Raiders went on a 12-2 run to gain an 11 point lead. Texas Tech was able to build on this lead for the remainder of the half. Texas Tech led 41-21 at the end of the half.
The Aggies would never get closer than 18 points during the second half. This allowed the Lady Raiders to get their bench players some good minutes while the starters rested. Texas Tech won the game by a score of 77-56.
This was one of those games where Plenette Pierson and Jia Perkins simply outplayed everyone on the other team. Pierson finished with 25 points, while Perkins scored 20 in the game. Pierson has been doing an excellent job finishing when she can get the ball low in the post. Erin Grant did a good job running the offense from the point. Natalie Ritchie, playing a slightly different role, dished out 5 assists. This was a good, but not great, performance by the Lady Raider offense. Look out for a strong performance when they face Baylor at home this Saturday.
Texas Tech played a great defensive game for the first half, but there was a slight letdown in intensity during the second half. The Lady Raiders allowed just 21 points on 10 of 33 (30.3%) shooting in the first half. That is the kind of defense that wins championships. Erin Grant did a good job defensively, holding Toccara Williams to just 10 points. The Lady Raiders forced the Aggies into 21 turnovers. Jia Perkins led the way with 3 steals. Plenette Pierson finished the night with 5 blocks. If Texas Tech can keep their defensive intensity for 40 minutes they will be hard to beat.
