Lady Raiders Defeat Sooners, 80-71

The Texas Tech Lady Raiders (14-1, 3-0) defeated the Oklahoma Sooners (10-5, 1-1) to move to 3-0 in conference play. All five starters scored in double digits to lead the Lady Raiders to victory.

The Lady Raiders started the game with an 8-0 run, but the Oklahoma answered with a 6-0 run to keep Texas Tech from running away early.  After the initial runs, the game settled into an evenly played game for most of the first half.  The Lady Raiders used a 7-0 run at the 8:35 mark to take a 26-17 lead.  Texas Tech would extend the lead slightly as the half ended.  Texas Tech led 40-29 at the half.

The Lady Raiders were able to maintain a nice lead for the entire second half.  Oklahoma made a run at the end of the game, but it was too late for the Sooners to get back into the game.  Texas Tech won by a score of 80-71.

Offense

Tonight's game was as good an example of a balanced offense as you are going to find.  Plenette Pierson led the way with 18 points.  Erin Grant added a career high 16 points.  Jia Perkins and Natalie Ritchie both scored 13 points.  Cisti Greenwalt was the fifth starter in double digits with 11 points.  Tonight's performance showed the rest of the Big 12 what Lady Raider fans already knew, the Lady Raiders have excellent scorers at all five positions.  Grant's performance may be the most significant as the season continues.  Opponents will have to respect Grant as a scorer after her performance tonight.  That should create more space for players like Pierson to operate.  If this happens the Texas Tech offense will be more dangerous than it already was.

Defense

The Texas Tech defense had another outstanding performance.  The quickness of the Lady Raiders allowed Texas Tech to apply good pressure to Oklahoma for most of the game.  It would be tough to find a better defensive backcourt than Erin Grant and Jia Perkins.  Both players play aggressive defense and have a knack for getting steals.  Backcourt defense should be a great advantage during the next few games.  The rest of the defense deserves credit as well.  Plenette Pierson and Cisti Greenwalt have been doing a good job defensively the last few games.  LaToya Davis has provided good intensity off the bench, particularly on the defensive glass.
